Paris & Helen, directing Cupid to Inflame each others Heart w.th Love
[after Angelica Kauffman]
Published 12th May 1794 by Laurie & Whittle, No 53 Fleet Street, London
Mezzotint with small margins, platemark 350 x 250mm (13¾ x 9¾"). 'CL-B' collector's stamp verso.
Interesting example of fine art repurposed as a popular humorous print. Valentine Green's mezzotint of Angelica Kauffman's painting of Paris and Helen was an example of one of the finest printmakers in the country treating reproducing mythological subject matter by one of the most esteemed painters in the country. Here the composition becomes light-hearted and domestic. Originally a pair with 'Renaldo arresting the Arm of Armida', apparently also after Kauffman.

A topless women attempts to drag a clothed man into bed with; she begs that he help her 'evade the tax upon the maids'. In order to finance the war against the rebelling American colonies, the government proposed a servant tax, which was extended to women servants in 1785. This caused huge uproar as maids were commonly owned by the middle class and were less likely to be a symbol of status - unlike male servants. The tax on female servants was successfully repealed in 1792. Published in 'The Ramblers Magazine, or, the Annals of Gallantry, Glee, Pleasure and the Bon Ton' (1784-1791). A young couple sit awkwardly, the wife faced away from her husband, demonstrating that the honeymoon period has definitely ended. The tightening of marriage regulations in England in the 18th century prevented couples under the age of 21 from marrying without their parents consent. This gave rise to the phenomenon of young couples marrying over the border in Scotland, which inspired many satirical prints depicting both the joys and perils of impulsive decisions.

A horned Abercorn puts the ring on the finger of Anne who turns aside to point up at a high alcove, serving as an altar, in which are the torso of a grinning satyr and two goats. A woman in a veiled shroud stands behind her presumably the ghost of the first wife of Abercorn, Catherine Copley who died 13th September 1791. Behind Abercorn stand three crying women who are most likely his daughters from his first marriage: Harriet, Maria and Catherine Hamilton.

[An unexpected Levee for a new married couple]
[An unexpected Levee for a new married couple]
[Printed for Carington Bowles, at his Map & Print Warehouse, No.69 in St. Pauls Church Yard, London. Published as the Act directs, Jan 2d. 1775]
Mezzotint, sheet 330 x 250mm (13 x 9¾"). Trimmed to image.
A newly married naval officer with his horrified bride standing on the left, surrounded by women pressing on him the promises of marriage he had made to them, while another demands payment for board and lodging. He has clearly made at least one of the women pregnant, although she weeps in despair rather than haranguing him. As Cindy McCreery notes, 'the theme of men reluctantly acknowledging their paternity was a standard joke in many prints, especially mezzotint drolls'. She also perceptively draws the parallel between the drama of the scene, and the three pictures on the wall: Lucretia stabbing herself after being raped; a man in Turkish dress standing amongst a group of veiled women, apparently to select a concubine; and a ship in a violent storm.
