He who talks and runs away May live to fight a Double Day.
[Anon., c.1832.]
Etching, sheet 205 x 265mm. 8 x 10½". Trimmed to plate.
Political satire; Thomas Doubleday (1790 - 1870), Newcastle-born poet, dramatist, biographer, radical politician and political economist creeps away from a rally (on the 'Town Moor' in the background) towards the safety of Cambois village in Northumberland (indicated by the sign). He is armed with sword and shield and progresses with caution. Doubleday devoted himself entirely to the cause of the people, and aided the Whig party by voice and pen in helping forward the reform agitation of 1832. He was secretary to the northern political union, and prominent in the agitation which the union prosecuted in aid of Earl Grey and the reforming party in parliament. At a great meeting held in Newcastle in 1832 he moved one of the resolutions. Warrants were drawn out for the arrest of Doubleday and others on the charge of sedition, but were never served, as the government went out of office in a few days. After the Reform Bill Doubleday, unlike many whigs, maintained his old position. His unbending integrity won for him the respect of both sides. He and Charles Attwood presented an address to Earl Grey on behalf of the northern political union, declaring the Reform Bill unsatisfactory to the people, and advocating some of the points afterwards adopted by the chartists. A pencil note on the print lower right alleges that Doubleday did not attend a meeting the military were expected to suppress.

Thomas Doughty was an English nobleman, soldier, scholar and personal secretary of Christopher Hatton. In 1577, on an expedition with Francis Drake to attack Spanish treasure fleets, he fell out with Drake and was put on trial for treason and witchcraft and executed on July 2, 1578. His execution established the idea that a ship's captain was its absolute ruler, regardless of the rank or social class of his passengers and crew.

[The Honble. Arch.d Douglas.]
[The Honble. Arch.d Douglas.]
G. Willison pinxit. Val. Green fecit.
Publish'd Octr. 22nd 1770, by G. Willison Greek Street, Soho, London.
Proof mezzotint, scratched letters and publication line, 422 x 605mm 16½ x 23¾ inches. Minor rubbing, minor printing imperfection in the plate in Justice's robes, stains lower left. In the final state the engraving carries a dedication, "To his Grace Charles Duke of Queensberry and Dover, This plate is most humbly Dedicated by His Grace's most obedient and obliged humble Servant. George Willison".
Allegorical portrait, bust-length to front within oval, held by figure of Justice, resting the image on carved pedestal and trampling Calumny beneath her feet; proof. Archibald Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas [1748–1827] litigant and politician. The relief medallions of Camden and Mansfield are references to the final decision in one of the eighteenth century's most famous legal battles. The Douglas Cause, was the challenge to Archibald's inheritance by the Hamiltons, who argued that he and his brother were supposititious. The Hamilton lawyers put together a plausible circumstantial argument that Archibald was actually Jacques Louis Mignon, the son of a Parisian glassworker, who had disappeared in July 1748. The case was litigated at great length and expense (the two sides spent £54,000 between them). It attracted tremendous interest, especially in Scotland. Not only was a large estate at stake, but many felt that requiring Archibald Douglas to in effect prove his identity raised a question that could endanger the security of inheritance in general. In Scotland the Douglas side enjoyed broad popular support, with James Boswell an especially eager partisan, though many of the literati favoured the Hamilton side. In 1767 the court of session decided by the casting vote of the lord president against Douglas. Douglas appealed to the House of Lords which, following the opinions of law lords Mansfield and Camden, reversed the decision without a division.

The other sitters were: her brother Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guildford; her husband, Sylvester; and son Frederick Sylvester Douglas. The four portraits are lauded as masterpieces of the classical art of drawing. So great is their mastery that experts have disputed whether Ingres, having no previous documented experience of lithography, could have achieved such a feat. However, Felix Man argues convincingly that in Rome Ingres would have had the necessary facilities likely found at the printing and publishing establishment of Giovanni Dall'Armi (XXI-XXII, Man 1953). Though the portraits were drawn by Ingres in Rome, the family took the stone back to England to be printed by Charles Hullmandel in 1820, when he added the sitters' titles and biographical dates.

The other sitters were North's sister, Lady Glenbervie, her husband, Sylvester Douglas, and their son, Frederick Sylvester Douglas.

William Dove.
William Dove. as he appeared during his trial at the York Assizes, July 19th 1856.
[n.d., c.1856.]
Rare lithograph. Sheet 360 x 260mm (14¼ x 10¼"). Some creasing.
Half length portrait in profile of William Dove, a tenant farmer, while on trial for poisoning his wife. Dove (1828-56) was deeply disturbed: as a child he had tortured cats, chased his sisters with a red-hot poker and was kicked out of school for bringing a gun. Falling under the influence of Henry Harrison, a charlatan fortune-teller, he was told he would marry a woman with 'auburn hair, light complexion and a good fortune'. Believing this was a neighbour, he decided to kill his existing wife with strychnine so that he could follow his destiny. Ending up on trial, he wrote a letter to the devil in his own blood, asking for help. Although being clearly insane, he was found guilty and sent to the gallows: his execution was watched by an estimated crowd of 10,000.
