Mayor-elect John Key and Claudius Stephen Hunter, sit on the Duke of Wellington. One of many satires against Key which followed his advice that Wellington cancel the King's visit to Guildhall for the Lord Mayor's Day dinner on 9 November 1830, on the grounds that the Duke's assassination and a rebellion were planned. The Don-Key Turn'd Mayor Or an Ass in the Chair.
[Anon., 1830.]
Lithograph, sheet 360 x 255mm. 14¼ x 10".
An ass with the head of Sir John Key (1794 – 1858), Lord Mayor of London, sits erect in an arm-chair, hind legs on a stool, forelegs extended towards a horse prancing towards him over a table. The horse represents Sir Claudius Stephen Hunter (1775 – 1851), a former Lord Mayor, and it looks at Key with startled eye and open mouth. The King and Duke of Wellington’s visit to Guildhall for the Lord Mayor’s Day dinner on 9th November was abandoned on Key’s advice; he feared riots and the Duke’s assassination. He and his colleagues were widely lampooned as a result. BM Satires: 16307. See ref: 31964

Doctor Adam Donald, Prophet of Bethelnie. Born Anno 1703. ob: Anno 1780. Engraved for The Bee.
J: W,,s [John Williams] ad viv: delint. 1772.
[n.d., 1791]
Rare copper engraving. 145 x 90mm (5¾ x 3½").
Quack doctor Adam Donald (1703-80). Born in Aberdeenshire with disabilities that prevented him from a life of manual labour, his mannerisms, charm, and apparent skills led to his calling as a spiritualist. Donald was called to consult on all matters related to health by the local citizens. A habit of lurking through churchyards ‘speaking’ with the dead fuelled his supernatural legitimacy, while owning several books in other languages (of which he could not speak) contributed to his scholarly image among the townspeople. Prescribing remedies ranging from milk baths to singing on chimneys, he could do no harm. If a death occurred it was the patient’s mistake for not following the ‘Prophet’s’ orders, never Donald’s. While Donald’s wife kept his secret during their marriage, his daughter exposed him as a quack and fraud following his death in 1780.

The only way the body could be identified was by a ring bearing the bride's name, Ginevra. Printed on two plates.

[Russo-Turkish War.] Übergang der Russen über die Donau, im Junÿ 1828.
Nürnberg im Verlag von G.N. Renners Kunsthandlung. [n.d., c.1830.]
Etching. Sheet 165 x 265mm (6¼ x 10¼"). Trimmed, lateral edges toned, small tear. Damaged.
A scene of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829, showing the Russians crossing the Danube in boats. The war started after the Russians helped the Greek independence movement fight the Battle of Navarino in 1827: the Turks closed the Dardanelles to Russian ships and revoked the Akkerman Convention. The war ended with the Treaty of Adrianople, which increased Russian dominance around the Black Sea area and Georgia, and, most importantly, forced the Sultan to promise autonomy for Greece.

Stanhope was ambassador to The Hague from 1728, and was subsequently rewarded with the Order of the Garter and the position of Lord Steward. He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1745 and Secretary of State in 1755. Chesterfield married George I's daughter Petronilla Melusina von der Schulenberg, a marriage which brought a windfall that Chesterfield put towards completing the magnificent house shown here. Situated on South Audley Street in London's Mayfair, then directly facing Hyde Park, it was given its grand opening in 1752. Demolished in 1937, the house was replaced by a block of flats appropriately named Chesterfield House. For engraving of Chesterfield's house individually see ref. 9547.

Rare tinted lithograph. Sheet 460 x 370mm (18 x 14½"), with large margins.
Head and shoulders portraits of Dost Mohammed Khan, his two sons Muhammad Akram Khan and Haider Khan, and his cousin Abd al-Ghani Khan, from Emily Eden's 'Portraits of the Princes & Peoples of India'. Dost Mohammed Khan had been Emir of Afghanistan until he was deposed by the British in 1839 at the beginning of the First Afghan War and exiled to Mussoorie. He returned to the throne after the disasterous conclusion to the war for the British. The Hon. Emily Eden, the seventh daughter of William Eden, first baron Auckland, accompanied her brother, George, Lord Auckland (1784-1849) to India, where he served as Governor-General from 1835-1842. A highly gifted amateur artist and writer, Eden recorded her observations of life in India during this period in the form of letters and an extensive collection of sketches, meeting people like Dost Mohammed using her brother's influence. On her return to England in 1842, Eden arranged to have her images printed privately as a portfolio of 24 lithographs.
