Angelo was born in Leghorn, Italy, as Angelo Domenico Malevolti Tremamondo and was the first to emphasize fencing as a means of developing health, poise, and grace. As a result of his insight and influence, fencing changed from an art of war to a sport. Soon after arriving in England he established 'Angelo's School of Arms' in Carlisle House, Soho, London. There he taught the aristocracy the fashionable art of Swordsmanship which they had previously had to go the continent to learn, and also set up a riding school in the former rear garden of the house. He was also a fencing instructor to the Royal Family.

Engraved for the Stationers' Almanack. The Stationers' Company had published the Stationers' Almanack since 1747, a single-sheet which consisted of calendar text set out beneath an engraved headpiece that recorded significant events of the preceeding year.

A satire comparing 'Pagan Laws' & 'Hindoo Morals' with British 'Civilization', published around the time Queen Victoria assumed the title of 'Empress of India'. The Governor-General of India (probably Robert Bulwer-Lytton, in office 1876-80) sits in a Car of Juggernaut topped with the Lion & Unicorn, and decorated with the ills of British society, including 'Outrage & Robbery', 'Drunkenness', 'Plunder', 'Wife Kicking' and 'Murder & Mutilation - Wainwright' (a reference to Henry Wainwright who was hanged for murdering and dismembering his mistress in 1875). The studded wheels are marked 'Taxes'. On either side is an Indian figure: one carries a sheet 'Touch Not Wine'; the other 'Love Your Wife & Family. Respect Old Age'. Underneath are four quadrains explaining the print.

The schooner yacht Cambria, of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, won the "great ocean race" of 1870 against the American yacht Dauntless, from Daunt Rock, Queenstown, Ireland, July 4th, to Sandy Hook on the New Jersey coast, USA - arriving July 27th. The Dauntless was commanded by James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841 - 1918), publisher of the New York Herald and the youngest Commodore ever of the New York Yacht Club. His extravagant lifestyle and shocking behaviour are believed to have inspired the phrase "Gordon Bennett" as an expression of incredulity. Short descriptions of each yacht below title. By Thomas Goldsworth Dutton (1819/20 - 1891; fl.).
