George Dempster Esq.
George Dempster Esq. [European Magazine]
Published 1 Aug 1793 by J. Sewell 32 Cornhill
Engraving, 155 x 105mm (6 x 4"). Trimmed inside platemark, losing 'European Magazine' text.
George Dempster (1732-1818), agriculturist and politician. Dempster studied law but turned his back on the legal profession to go into politics. Having inherited family estates of some 6000 acres, he was able to finance a campaign as candidate for the (notoriously corrupt) Perthshire district of burghs, which he won against the odds, but at crippling costs. Dempster strengthened his position in subsequent elections (he was MP for 28 years), but had to sell around 2500 acres of land to cover his costs. Dempster was known for his independence, voting against the Stamp Act and opposing government attempts to oppress the colonists in America. He retired from politics in 1789. Dempster also developed an interest in India, becoming director of the East India Company in 1769 and 1772. He defended Warren Hastings against the Edmund Burke's campaign of impeachment. Dempster was also famous for his efforts to advance Scottish commerce and manufactures, promoting the textile industry, founding the first bank in Dundee (having noticed that the lack of proper banking facilities hampered trade), leading improvements to fisheries and promoting road building. He also carried out significant agricultural improvements on his own land and encouraged other landowners to follow his example. Plate from the 'European Magazine'.

Se vend à la Haye chez T. Johnson Libraire. [n.d., c.1715.]
Engraved map with original colour. 460 x 620mm (18 x 24½"). Large margins.
A detailed plan of the Battle of Denain, 24 July 1712, part of the War of the Spanish Succession. On one side was Eugene of Savoy's army and the Dutch commanded by the first Duke of Albermarle (Arnold van Keppel, a favourite of William of Orange); on the other the French under Marshal Claude Louis Hector de Villars. The French surprise attack succeded and Albemarle and his staff were taken prisoner, with some 4,100 troops. Eugene's army managed to escape, but the blow to the Allies allowed the French to recover much of the territory they had lost. T. Johnson published an account of Denain in 1713, 'avec une carte', apparently this one. All other examples of this map are later printing by Neaulme, 1747, with Johnson's name erased.

[n.d., c.1770.]
Mezzotint with small margins, platemark 355 x 255mm (14 x 10"). Very fine proof before letters; slight creasing.
Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark (1751-1775). The youngest child of Frederick, Prince of Wales, she married her cousin, Christian VII of Denmark, at the age of fifteen. After the birth of their first child, produced for the sake of the succession, Christian turned his attentions to a young courtesan, leaving Caroline unhappy and lonely. By 1770 she had taken Johann Friedrich Struensee, the new royal physician, as a lover, and as the king's health declined, their influence increased. However, in 1772, both were arrested, Struensee was executed soon after, and the marriage of Caroline and Christian was dissolved by divorce. She was deported on board a British Frigate and resided in Celle Castle (in Hanover, the territory of her brother, George III). her brother's territory of Hanover. She hoped to return to Denmark, but died suddenly of scarlet fever in 1775 at the age of 23. After the 1766 pastel by Francis Cotes (versions in Schloßmuseum Marienburg bei Nordstemmen and Nationalhistoriske Museum, Frederiksborg), probably executed shortly before Caroline Matilda's marriage to Christian VII.
