[Monogram of Paul Pry - William Heath] Esq.r del..
Pub June 26 1829 by T. McLean 26 Haymarket Sold Publisher of P. Prys Caricatures.
Hand-coloured etching. 370 x 260mm (14½ x 10¼"), on paper watermarked 'J Whatman Turkey Mill 1828', with large margins.
Frederick Peter Delmé-Radcliffe (1804-1871), the noted gentleman jockey in charge of the King's Stud, depicted as a thin man in riding dress with top-hat and top-boots, holding out a betting-book. The performance of the king's horse 'The Colonel' at the Ascot Gold Cup on June 18th disappointed William IV; a letter appeared in the 'Sporting Magazine', signed by 'Independence', claiming the horse had been seen being hacked by a drunken rider only four days before the race. Delmé-Radcliffe issued a denial, but had difficulty getting it published. Heath gives a nod to the author of the letter by referencing the Greek struggle for independence. 'Paul Pry' was the pseudonym of William Heath. BM Satires: 15932.

[Delos.]
[Drawn by A. Arrowsmith?]
[London: Elizabeth Stuart, 1794.]
Engraved map with aquatint. 530 x 370mm, 21 x 14½".
Map of the Greek island of Delos, published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by James 'Athenian' Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Delos had been the meeting place of the Delian League, a defensive group of Greek city states founded in 477BC but eventually overwhelmed and turned into the Athenian Empire by 454BC. Stuart (1713–88) and Revett (1720–1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'. This map was published in Volume 4; the general map of Attica in the same volume was signed by Arrowsmith. The hatchuring of elevated regions has been aquatinted, an uncommon usage.

Engraving. Sheet 225 x 175mm (9 x 7"). Trimmed to plate.
Portrait of Democritus (c. 46 c. 370 BC) who was an Ancient Greek pre-Socratic philosopher from Abdera, primarily remembered today for his formulation of an atomic theory of the universe, engraved by William Blake. Democritus wrote extensively on a wide variety of topics. None of Democritus' original work has survived, except through second-hand references. Many of these references come from Aristotle, who viewed him as an important rival in the field of natural philosophy. He was known in antiquity as the ‘laughing philosopher’ because of his emphasis on the value of cheerfulness. From Vol I of Lavater, pg. 159.
