The Unfortunate Death of Major Andre [with 'The Manner in which the American Colonies Declared themselves Independant of the King of England, throughout the different Provinces, on July 4 1776]

[both from Barnard's New Complete & Authentic History of England, 1783]
Two engravings, both approx 180 x 125mm (7 x 5"). Both trimmed to image, losing text and border, and glued to backing sheets. With text for the Death of Major Andre glued to sheet separately.
Two scenes of American interest, from Edward Barnard's history of England (1783). The first shows Americans celebrating the Declaration of Independence in 1776 (one person waves a flag while another holds a sign reading 'America Independant 1776') while the second shows the hanging of John André at Tappan, New York on 2 October 1780. André, an army officer and spy, was aide-de-camp of Henry Clinton, commander-in-chief of British forces in America from 1778. In this capacity André handled the correspondence between Clinton and various American spies, and also negotiated with General Benedict Arnold, who was planning to surrender to the British the fort at West Point, New York. André was on his way to a personal interview with Arnold when, disguised as a civilian, he was seized by American militiamen. He was brought before a military board convened by George Washington, found to have acted in the character of a spy, and sentenced to hanging. André's actions were commemorated by a monument erected in Westminster Abbey in London, where his remains were transferred in 1821.

[German.] [n.d. c.1810.]
Stipple with large margins. Plate 152 x 89mm (6 x 3½").
Francois Andreossy (1633-1688) the French engineer and cartographer, who in 1660 went to study Italian canal technology in Lombardy and Padua. When he returned to France, he became Pierre-Paul Riquet's assistant as he was able to supply the technical expertise of canal building that Riquet lacked. He was also responsible for the levelling and the drawing of the maps. He monitored the construction and assisted Riquet until Riquet's death, after which he continued to work at the canal. Many argue that the Canal du Midi should be attributed to Andreossy and not Riquet. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.

[Lancelot Andrewes.]
[Lancelot Andrewes.] Vera Effigies Reverendi in Christo Patris Dni: Lanceloti Andrewes Episcopi Wintoniensis.
W. Hollar fecit 1643.
Etching, platemark 125 x 70mm (5 x 2¾"). Unidentified collector's stamp verso.
Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626), English bishop and scholar, who held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. Under King James I he served successively as Bishop of Chichester, Ely and Winchester and oversaw the translation of the Authorised Version of the Bible. This appears to be the 'very deceptive copy' mentioned by Pennington, which closely copies Wenceslaus Hollar's etching but with noticeable differences to the sitter's face and the writing of Hollar's name. Hollar's print was itself based on that by John Payne prefixed to Andrewes' 'XCVI Sermons' of 1632.
Pennington 1340 (copy); L.4329.

Effigies R. P. Lanceloti Andrewes Episcopi Wintoniensis.
Effigies R. P. Lanceloti Andrewes Episcopi Wintoniensis. See heer a Shadow from that setting Sunne,/ Whose glorious course through this Horizon runn/ Left the dimm face of our dull Hemisphere,/ All one great Eye all drown'd in one great Teare./ Whose rare industrious Soule led his free thought/ Through Learning's Universe, and (vainly) soughy/ Room for her spacious Self; untill at length/ She found y.e way home: with an holy strength/ Snatch't herself hence to Heav'n; fill'd a bright place/ 'Midst those immortal Fires, and on the face/ Of her Great Maker, fixt a flaming eye,/ Where still she reads true, pure Divinitie./ And now y.t grave Aspect hath deign'd to shrink/ Into this lesse appearance. If you think/ 'Tis but a dead face, Art doth heer bequeath/ Look at the following leaves & see him breath.
John Payne fecit.
