Engraving, sheet 350 x 255mm (13¾ x 10"). Small margins.
George William, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1624-1705). After the death of Julius Francis, duke of Saxe-Lauenberg in 1689, George William invaded the duchy, which Julius Francis had decided to leave to one of his daughters rather than a close male claimant such as George William. Eventually the occupation was legitimised by Emperor Charles VI, when George William's second successor, George II, king of Great Britain, was formally given Saxe-Lauenberg. George William was the father of Sophia Dorothea of Celle, wife of George I of Great Britain.

Gernsbach-north from Baden to the Black Forest Sept. 27 1836
F.W. Trench.
Lithograph, rare, printed area 185 x 260mm (7¼ x 10¼") large margins.
Gernsbach, a town in the Black Forest, Germany, near Baden-Baden. Amateur lithograph made during a trip to continental Europe by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859). In December 1819 he was returned as an MP for Cambridge in an election controlled by the Duke of Rutland, owner of Belvoir, and he made several lithographs of Belvoir castle. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced).

P. Mazell sculp.
Publish'd as the Act directs Jan. 1 1777.
Rare engraving, 18th century watermark. 205 x 370mm (8 x 14½"). Large margins on 3 sides.
''Half way between Carteia and the Spanish lines, runs into the sea a little river, collected from different springs about a mile up the country; on its pleasant banks several Spaniards have established themselves, and planted gardens of orange-trees, sweet canes, pomegranates, and evergreens; the eternal blossom of the oranges, and the advantage of angling in a river full of fish, induced a gentleman of the garrison to erect a little hut of canes under the shade of an enormous walnut, where the officers find beds, and the little requisites for passing an agreeable day in this amiable spot.'' From Francis Carter's two-volume 'A Journey from Gibraltar to Malaga' (1777). Carter (1741?-1783), a traveller and collector of coins, was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries that same year, but died before completing his next work, a study of early Spanish printed books.

[n.d., 1833-42.]
Pair of pencil sketches. Sheets 70 x 330mm, 2¾ x 13", and 90 x 330mm, 3½ x 13". Folded for inclusion in a sketchbook.
Hamilton's active naval career spanned 1833 to 1842 and, apart from his early stay in Jamaica, his postings make it hard to pinpoint the date of these sketches. As a young master's mate Hamilton served on board HMS Malabar in the Mediterranean 1835-36 and Iberia in 1836-7. He later served in the Royal Navy during the First Opium War (1839-42), seeing action at Hong Kong which he also recorded in his sketch album. He would have undoubtedly visited Gibraltar many times.

[Manuel de Godoy.] En Memoria de la Paz de M.DCC.XCV. Il Señor Pricipe de la Paz.
[n.d., c.1795.]
Mezzotint, very scarce. Sheet 500 x 350mm, 19¾ x 13¾". Trimmed to plate, several paper cracks, damaged.
Portrait of Don Manuel Francisco Domingo de Godoy (1767-1851), seated before the goddess Peace, who holds an olive branch above him. Behind is a bust of Charles IV, who made Godoy Prime Minister of Spain in 1792. Godoy has given the title of '1st principe de la Paz' (1st Prince of the Peace) in 1795 for negotiating the Treaty of Basel, which withdrew Spain from the War of the First Coalition against revolutionary France. This proved to be a disaster for Spain: the closer ties with France led to war with Portugal and Great Britain, the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, then popular revolt against Charles IV in 1808. Godoy went into exile and was not allowed to return until 1844.

[Jean Francoise Paul de Gondi]
[Jean Francoise Paul de Gondi] Haec Domat. Illa Tuetur.
R. Nantueil Faciebat. 1650 [after Philippe de Champaigne].
Engraving. 290 x 210mm (11½ x 8¼").
A half portrait of Jean Francoise Paul de Gondi (1613-1679), wearing clerical dress and a crucifix in a trompe l'oeil stone window. Gondi was a politically motivated churchman, elected Cardinal de Retz in 1650, and was a key player in The Fronde, earning himself the longstanding emnity of Louis XIV. Throughout his career he was protected and supported by Pope Innocent X. Their relationship proved exceptionally forunate after Retz escaped from prison, during which he became the Archbishop of Paris, and was welcomed by the Pope in Rome. Innocent X refused to let him resign as archbishop despite immense pressure from the King. Eventually, yielding to the King's demands, he returned to Paris after the death of his nemesis Cardinal Mazarin but was compensated handsomely with income from twelve estates. Petitjean and Wickert assert that Nanteuil's engraving was after the portrait by Jean Morin after de Champaigne. Frontis "Histoire des Papes" 1653.
