William Dakin Gent. Mag. Oct.r 1800 Pl.1
Branscomb, Newbury Pinx.t 1800. B. Sc.
Published by Nichols & Son Nov.r 1st 1800
Engraving, sheet 210 x 125mm (8¼ x 5"). Trimmed inside platemark.
The October 1800 edition of the Gentleman's Magazine included 'Anecdotes of W. Dakin, a charitable Enthusiast', illustrated by this portrait. of Dakin. Therein, he is described as 'the famous man with the black beard, who goes around the country distributing money to the poor, which he did in the towns of Reading and Henley to a large amount'. The author writes that Dakin was 'not more than 45 years of age', and chiefly resident at Cliff Regis, near Oundle, having come from Yorkshire originally. Dakin was apparently 'infected...with the enthusiastic delirium' by a preacher, leading Dakin to 'fancy himself to be Jesus Christ'. After several 'acts of insanity' resulting from the delusion, Dakin was ordered to undergo medical treatment by a magistrate, after which 'he has been more reasonable and cautious'. While recounting Dakin's many charitable acts, the anonymous author refererences Dakin's 'suspicous' morality (living for several years with a woman who had deserted her husband and family to be his 'disciple') and his 'dubious' political opinions ('he has appeared at the head of two or three mobs'). At the time of publication Dakin was supposedly on a year's pilgrimage dispensing of the legacy of his recently-deceased sister. See 'Gentleman's Magazine', October 1800, pp.921-2.

Dess: au Physionotrace et Gravé par Quenedey rue neuve des petit-champs no.15 à Paris, 1809.
Se vend chez Quenedey rue neuve des Petits Champs No.15 a Paris. Dep. a la Bib Imp.
Etching and aquatint with small margins, platemark 250 x 195mm (9¾ x 7¾"). On watermarked laid paper; creases.
Portrait of French composer Nicolas-Marie d'Alayrac, known as Nicolas Dalayrac (1753 - 1809), best known for his opéras-comiques; bust-length, turned to right, with short grey hair, earring, and decoration pinned to jacket. By Edme Quénedey (1756 - 1830), miniature painter and engraver, who made much use of the physionotrace, a mechanised drawing instrument that could reproduce the outline profile of a portrait. It was invented by Gilles-Louis Chretien, who engraved Quenedey's portraits from 1787 to 1789, in 1786. Chretien and Quenedey founded a very successful portrait studio in Paris together in 1788. Between 1786 - c.1810 there were only two studios in Paris which produced a relatively small number of physionotrace engravings. Consequently very few of these intriguing portraits are preserved today. Because of their origins and the realism physionotrace portraits have, they can be seen as true photo-graphic objects and are therefore classified as a forerunner of photography. Copper engraving with large margins. Collector's mark on verso. Plate 355 x 260mm. 14 x 10¼". Tears into plate lower left.
Anna Dalkeith, Countess of Morton (d.1654), was daughter or Sir Edward Villiers and wife to Robert Douglas, Earl of Morton. Lombart's most famous work was the series of twelve portraits after van Dyck that he engraved around 1660, often known as the 'Countesses' from the Latin of their titles. Mariette in his entry on Lombart in his Abecedario stated that this set alone would suffice to place him 'au rang des premiers graveurs'. All twelve plates are the same size, and show three-quarter-length figures, ten women and two men, in 15mm wide borders that imitate frames of the period. London Pubd. May 1st. 1824. R. Ackermann Strand.
Lithograph on india laid paper, image 370 x 510mm (14½ x 20"). Some foxing. Backing sheet frayed.
While there is no reference by Julia Frankau to this very unusual and rare lithograph of the Dalmatian dog, an exhibition list does mention a drawing with the same title exhibited at the British Institute in 1806. A prolific artist, James Ward R..A. (1769 - 1859) was one of the finest animal, portrait, and landscape painters of Regency England. Brittle, pious, and argumentative, Ward worked well into the mid-19th century, creating dynamic compositions that epitomized Romanticism. He was devoted to the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, and emulated them more than any of his contemporaries.

John Dalrymple, second earl of Stair (1673-1747), diplomat and army officer. Dalrymple's early career was characterized by military service during the Nine Years' War; the duke of Marlborough became Dalrymple's mentor and patron.
