[Christoph Friedrich von Ammon]
F. Bartolozzi R.A. fecit
London Published as the Act directs Nov.12 1791
Stipple printed in brown, sheet 180 x 130mm (5 x 7"). Trimmed to platemark. Rare.
Christoph Friedrich von Ammon (1877-1850), German theological writer and preacher. Engraved by Francesco Bartlozzi (1725-1815), Florentine engraver elected a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768 (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This portrait was published after Bartolozzi had left England for the continent.

L'Amour en Ribote [The Drunken Cupid; in image, to banner cartouche upper left.]
['peint par Eisen Père - Gravé par L. Halbou.]
[A Paris chés Basan Graveur n.d., c.1760.]
Rare engraving, proof before letters, sheet 455 x 335mm. 18 x 13¼". Trimmed to plate.
This scene was painted with a companion "Les dragons de Vénus". Three figures framed by a carved masonry or wooden border. A latter-day cupid, a portly young male with bow and quiver of arrows over his shoulder perched on the lintel, talks to two young ladies, earnestly entreating them for more wine from the bottle that one lady holds. This cupid seems already somewhat inebriated, and the woman holds the bottle away from his outstretched hand, while he holds up an empty glass in his left hand. A potted vine laden with grapes grows against the left side of the frame, while an arrow pierces a heart lower right. Painted by François Eisen, engraved by Louis Michel Halbou and published by Pierre François Basan, this appears to be a rare engraving: according to their website catalogue the Bibliothèque nationale de France hold only a photomechanical reproduction of this image.

Social satire: a woman is surprised to see her husband burst into a room in which she is taking tea with a fashionable and handsome young man. After Charles Philipon (1800 - 1862), a satirical print for Paris periodical 'Le Charivari', published in that title's first year. Under the regime of Charles X until the Revolution of 1830 the political caricature was prohibited by censorship and therefore Philipon's work focused more on social classes and Parisian types. In November 1830 he started publishing 'La Caricature', devoted to political satire. In 1832 he published the 'Charivari' with his brother-in-law Gabriel Aubert, with whom he founded the famous publishing house Maison Aubert.

A scene from the British invasion of Martinique during the Napoleonic Wars. L'Amphitrite, a 44-gun Armide class frigate commanded by François Denis de Keredern de Trobriand, was carrying despatches from Napoleon for the governor of Martinique. Arriving in the 3rd February Trobriand fought his way through the British bloackade into Fort-de-France harbour, cutting the corvette shown here in two. He landed his men then blew his frigate up to prevent her capture. Both French and English reports of the action complimented his bravery. The crew joined the garrison of Fort Desaix and Trobriand was killed during the British bombardment. Part of the hull of l'Amphitrite was discovered in 1960: artifacts were salvaged and put on display at the 'Service Régional de l'Archéologie'.

Specimen of Anastatic Printing.
Specimen of Anastatic Printing.
[n.d. c.1850.]
Etching, facsimile. 209 x 140mm. 8¼ x 5½". Folds as to put in pocket.
Anastatic printing was a form of facsimile reproduction invented and developed in Germany in the early 1840s, patented in England in 1844. Any illustration or text based on oil-based ink could be reproduced. The document to be copied was sponged with dilute nitric acid which saturated all parts except here the ink lay, the acid being repelled from those areas by the oily nature of the ink. The original was then placed face down on a polished zinc plate and passed under the roller of a press, the pressure of which caused the acid to bite into the plate except in the inked areas. The plate was then moistened with gum and water which adhered to the bitten parts but was repelled from the oily parts. The result was a relief printing plate, with the areas to be printed raised, the areas not to be printed eaten away. It had been intended to reproduce old and rare works, but had the major failing that it sometimes destroyed the original without producing a copy!
