The cows of Europe, divided into five regions: the British Isles, Holland & Denmark, Switzerland and Germany, the Empire of Austria and France. Many of the plates are copied from photographs by Adrien Nadar and artists like J. Mélin, Emile van Marcke and Rosa and Isodore Bonheur. The images are copied onto the plate using heliography, then manually enhanced using methods including soft ground etching, mezzotint and aquatint, and finished off with a lithographic background tint. The work usually contains five maps, which are not present here. As there is no evidence they were ever included it is likely they were folded into the text volumes in this issue.

George Garrard (1760 - 1826) was an animal painter who turned his attention to the making of casts and models of many subjects, but mainly of domestic animals. He was sponsored by the fifth Duke of Bedford, who was the first president of the Smithfield Club (founded I798), and by the third Earl of Egremont, as well as by other members of the Board of Agriculture. Garrard called his house in Hanover Square, London, 'The Agricultural Museum,' and from there he sold his paintings, engraving and models.

Painted by Geo. W. Fothergill. Drawn on Stone by W. Monkhouse, York.
[London: Ackermann & Co., 1842.]
Rare & scarce tinted lithograph, heightened in white. Sheet 340 x 400mm (13¼ x 15¾"). Small stain in sky.
A famous oak tree at Cowthorpe, near Wetherby, Yorkshire, said to predate the Norman Conquest. By the 19th century many of its branches had to be propped, but it lasted until 1950, when it fell and died, apparently after being hit by lightning. Dugdale wrote in his 'Antiquities of England': 'At this village may be seen the famous oak, exceeding in size even the Greendale oak at Welbeck in Nottinghamshire. The principal branch was rent off in 1718 in a storm, and being accurately measured was found to contain upwards of five tons of timber. Its present circumference at the ground is 60 feet, its principal limb extends 45 feet from the trunk, and its shadow is said to cover half an acre'.
