RMS Amazon was a wooden barque with three masts and a paddle wheel, launched in 1851. On her maiden voyage the bearings on her two side-lever steam engines kept overheating, which possibly led to a fire in the hay bales kept for animal feed. The order to abandon ship was given, but heavy seas swamped most of the boats launched. The brig 'Marsden', seen in the background, rescued 21 people from a lifeboat, at one stage believed to be the only survivors but, over the course of the next few days, two other boats were recovered. It is estimated that over two-thirds of the passengers and crew died. At the time the Admiralty supervised UK merchant ships contracted to carry mail, demanding that they all have wooden hulls. After the Amazon disaster this order was rescinded, so iron hulls became the norm.

The Ambassador tea clipper sailed between the chinese port of Fuchow and London, once doing so in 108 days (1872). The beached skeleton of the ship is in Estancia San Gregorio, Chile, where it was declared a national monument in 1973. It is one of the few surviving tea clippers. The clipped weighed about 692 tons and was made of steel and teak wood, making it very fast and sleek vessel.

Engraved by Captain William Baillie (1723-1810). Baillie retired from the army in 1761 with the rank of Captain and thereafter devoted himself to printmaking and dealing. He specialised in imitating old-master drawings and prints, using a variety of printmaking techniques. After Lambert Doomer (1624-1700), Dutch artist who owned several volumes of Rembrandt drawings. Rembrandt was a passion of Baillie's which may have led him to engrave this scene.

Launched in 1773, the ship was in service in the American Revolution and French Revolutionary Wars (including nearly five years as a French ship). She was broken up in 1810. William Adlam (1750-1823) served in the American War of Independence as a Captain in the 40th Regiment (the 2nd Somersetshire) of Foot. He then served with Nelson at the battles of Copenhagen, Ushant and Nile, and was aboard the Victory at Trafalgar. A keen artist, he drew and engraved a portrait of Voltaire in 1780 as well as naval scenes such as this.

Now known as 'The America's Cup', it is the oldest international sporting trophy.

The upper central portrait depicts Manco Cápac. In Inca mythology, Manco Cápac the first king of the Kingdom of Cuzco. Cuzco was a small kingdom in the Andes that began as a small city-state founded by the Incas around the 12th century. In time, through either warfare or peaceful assimilation, it began to grow and was succeeded by the Inca Empire. Manco Cápac is thought to have reigned until about 1230, though some put his death at 1107. Plate to the Gentleman's Magazine.
