[London: R. Reynolds, 1669.]
Rare engraving. Sheet 110 x 80mm (4¼ x 3¼"). Trimmed to image, notch in bottom edge.
Portrait of George Alsop, the frontispiece of his ''An Orthodox Plea for the Sanctuary of God, Common Service, and White Robe of the House''. This was a polemic in support of church worship. While he does not mention any nonconformist sects by name, he condemns 'wretches' who claim to have 'a quickening spirit within them that informs them of all things', apparently a reference to the Quaker 'inner light'. Alsop was ordained deacon by Henry King, Bishop of Chichester c.1666, then priest in 1669.

The Tower of William Tell at Altorf.
The Tower of William Tell at Altorf.
[Probably by Mary Anne Theresa Whitby, c.1828]
Rare lithograph. Printed area 140 x 140mm (5½ x 5½"). Foxing around edges.
The 13th century tower in the market place at Altdorf, Switzerland, where according to legend William Tell shot an apple from his son's head. In 1895 a memorial statue was erected in front of the tower. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).

The Substance of Two Letters addressed to Lord Althorp, on the Subject of the Renewal of the Charter of the Bank of England and the further Regulation of Banking in England and Wales, on the 12th and 15th of the 6th Month (June), 1833.
The Substance of Two Letters addressed to Lord Althorp, on the Subject of the Renewal of the Charter of the Bank of England and the further Regulation of Banking in England and Wales, on the 12th and 15th of the 6th Month (June), 1833.
[n.d. c.1833.]
Letterpress, scarce, 3 sides, 4to. Remains of red seal. Addressed to Charles Jackson Bank Doncaster; 342 x 209mm (13½ x 8¼"). Creasing, folds and soiling.
In 1833 Lord Althorp, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Grey's ministry, sought to appoint a Committee of Secrecy to inquire into the question of the renewal of the Bank's Charter, together with a grand enquiry into the 'existing system of banking by Banks of Issue in England and Wales'. The evidence given in this inquiry throws much light on banking history and the policy of the Bank of England: there was a general demand for more public information about the Bank's affairs. Against all precedent, the Report and the evidence leading to it were ordered to be printed; this caused a rapid fall in the price of Bank stock. On 6 August 1832 a specially convened General Court was held, when the accounts which had been rendered to the Secret Committee were submitted to the Proprietors. At a further Court, held on 20 September, the Proprietors expressed their complete confidence in the Directors. In 1833 the Bank Charter was extended, but one clause of the Act extending its Charter was very strongly contested by the Bank. This permitted the establishment of joint-stock banks in London 'and within 65 miles thereof', provided that they were banks of deposit only and did not issue their own notes. The Bank and its legal advisers contended that the clause infringed its existing privilege of exclusive banking, which should, they urged, be interpreted as a prohibition of all joint-stock banks in London and its environs, whether they issued notes or not. Althorp and his advisers were convinced, however, that under existing statutes such non-issuing joint-stock banks were legal and refused to give way. When the Bill passed into law, the prospectus of a London joint-stock bank had already been prepared and was thereupon published: it was that of the London and Westminster Bank.

Muenzer [after Kriehuber, c.1842]
Steel engraving, sheet 240 x 180mm (9½ x 7"). Trimmed inside platemark; paper tone.
Elias Parish Alvars (1808-49), harpist and composer. Born in Teignmouth, Devon, Alvars travelled widely in continental Europe and beyond to Russia and Turkey, studying and performing. Finally returning to England in 1842 Alvars played to Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace but found the establishment unsympathetic to his pioneering of the harp as a solo instrument, and returned to continental Europe. There his work excited contemporaries such as Berlioz, Liszt and Mendelssohn, the latter being particularly helpful in Alvars' career. In 1847 he settled in Vienna, where he remained until his death. Appointed 'chamber musician' to the emperor, he was known in the city as the 'Paganini of the harp'. He is still regarded as one of the greatest harpists of all time, and a pioneer in not just playing but also composing for the instrument.

RMS Amazon was a wooden barque with three masts and a paddle wheel, launched in 1851. On her maiden voyage the bearings on her two side-lever steam engines kept overheating, which possibly led to a fire in the hay bales kept for animal feed. The order to abandon ship was given, but heavy seas swamped most of the boats launched. The brig 'Marsden', seen in the background, rescued 21 people from a lifeboat, at one stage believed to be the only survivors but, over the course of the next few days, two other boats were recovered. It is estimated that over two-thirds of the passengers and crew died. At the time the Admiralty supervised UK merchant ships contracted to carry mail, demanding that they all have wooden hulls. After the Amazon disaster this order was rescinded, so iron hulls became the norm.
