Thomas Henry Shadwell Clerke (1792-1849), an Irish soldier who, after losing a leg at the Battle of Redinha (Peninsular War, 1811), became the editor of 'Colburn's United Service Magazine'. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society (elected 10 April 1833), and vice-president of the Royal United Service Institution, of which he had been one of the originators. He was also a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Geological Societies, and an honorary foreign secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1836, shortly after Clerk's death, Major Thomas Livingston Mitchell named two peaks in Victoria, Australia, 'Mount Shadwell' and 'Mount Clerke' in his honour.

Distant view of Clifton Hall, Lancashire, built in the 18th century, at the time it was occupied by Benjamin Heywood, one of the founders of Heywood's bank. It was subsequently a private asylum, while Clifton railway station was built near to the hall. Amateur lithograph by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859). Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced).

Clifton Observatory is a former corn and snuff mill, but in 1777 the sails were left turning during a gale and caused the equipment to catch light. After being derelict for 52 years, William West rented it from the Society of Merchant Venturers and installed a telescope and a camera obscura.

After an 1829 competition to design the bridge was annulled when Thomas Telford tried to declare himself the winner, the second competition (1830) was won by the 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The foundation stone was laid in 1831, but work was stopped almost immediately by the Bristol Riots. Restarted in 1836 the project continued to be dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. Brunel died prematurely aged 53 years in 1859 but the Bridge was completed as his memorial and finally opened in 1864.

A view using Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original design, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. After an 1829 competition to design the bridge was annulled when Thomas Telford tried to declare himself the winner, the second competition (1830) was won by the 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The foundation stone was laid in 1831, but work was stopped almost immediately by the Bristol Riots. Restarted in 1836 the project continued to be dogged with political and financial difficulties and by 1843, with only the towers completed, the project was abandoned. A view showing the proposed plan for the bridge linking Clifton with Leigh Woods in Somerset, with the Egyptian-style pylons topped with spinxes that were not used in the completed bridge. Plans to build a bridge were discussed as early as 1753, however, the bridge was not completed until 1864. The final design was drawn up by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw and was based on an earlier design by I.K. Brunel.
