Marie-Theodore Thérèse Ruggieri, was known as Mlle. Colombe being employed by the Comedie Italienne at an earlier time than her older sister. Marie-Catherine (1751-1830), Marie-Thérèse (1754-1837) and Marie-Madeleine Riggieri (1760-1841), known as Adeline, were among the most celebrated demi-mondaines of their era. Under the stage name 'Colombe', the beautiful (and notorious) Venetian-born actresses made a sensation in late eighteenth-century Paris. Jean Baptiste Patas french printmaker 1748 - 1817 may also be Charles Emmanuel Patas. This prints may be based on a composition by Fragonard who painted the famous actresses.

Born in 1795, John Frederick Herring spent the first eighteen years of his life in London, before moving to Doncaster. In Yorkshire, he married and began to earn his living as a humble painter of inn signs and coach insignia. Sketching equestrian subjects in his spare time, Herring’s talent was quickly noticed and he soon found himself painting hunters and racehorses for local patrons. He lived for a time in Newmarket, and then in London, where he may have been tutored by a well-known artist of the time, Abraham Cooper.

The Colosseum was built by Decimus Burton to house a panorama of London painted by Thomas Horner (1785-1844), sketched from a specially constructed hut on top of the dome of St Paul's during building work. Financial problems forced the Pantheon to open before Horner had finished the painting: both the financial backer and Horner then disappeared.

Lithograph. 227 x 280mm. 9 x 11".
During Columbus's stint as governor and viceroy, he had been accused of governing tyrannically. Columbus was physically and mentally exhausted; his body was wracked by arthritis and his eyes by ophthalmia. In October 1499, he sent two ships to Spain, asking the Court of Spain to appoint a royal commissioner to help him govern. The Court appointed Francisco de Bobadilla, a member of the Order of Calatrava; however, his authority stretched far beyond what Columbus had requested. Bobadilla was given total control as governor from 1500 until his death in 1502. Arriving in Santo Domingo while Columbus was away, Bobadilla was immediately peppered with complaints about all three Columbus brothers: Christopher, Bartolomé, and Diego. On 1 October 1500, Columbus and his two brothers, likewise in chains, were sent back to Spain.

The first Interview of Christopher Columbus with the Natives of America.
The first Interview of Christopher Columbus with the Natives of America.
Engraved for Middleton's Complete System of Geography.
[n.d., c.1777.]
Etching and engraving. 295 x 175mm (11½ x 7"). Trace of water stain to lower left corner.
Christopher Columbus (1451 – 1506) landed within the Bahamas Archipelago in October 1492 at a locale he named San Salvador. Mistaking the Carribean island for the East-Asian mainland, he referred to its inhabitants as "Indians". Severely underestimating the circumference of the Earth, Columbus had hypothesized that a westward route from Iberia to the Indies would be shorter and more direct than the overland trade route through Arabia. If true, this would have allowed his royal Spanish patrons entry into the lucrative spice trade. Plate to Charles Theodore Middleton's 'A new and complete system of Geography ... Embellished ... with ... copper plates, etc.', London 1777-78.
