Official Programme of the Return of the C.I.V. The March through London.
[London, 1900.]
Wood engraving on crepe paper, border printed in colours. Sheet 390 x 390mm (15¼ x 15¼"). Floral border with damage, foxed.
The return of the City Imperial Volunteers from the 2nd Boer War. The CIV were raised by the Lord Mayor in December 1899 specifically for the war, paid for by the City Livery Companies, bankers and City and West End firms. The recruits, who enlisted for one year, were granted the Freedom of the City of London before embarking for South Africa in January 1900. Their greatest success was at the Battle of Doornkop on 26th May 1900. Whereas the Gordon Highlanders used the traditional march uphill in line, making easy pickings for the entrenched Boers, the amateur C.I.V. used short bursts, with leap-frogging groups providing covering fire, thus minimising casualties and succesfully driving the Boers out. They returned home in October 1900 and made a state entry into the City on the 29th. Huge crowds turned out: the Central Line, which had been in operation for only a few weeks, alone carried 250,000 passengers.

Rare finely coloured copper engraving, top section of a writing sheet. Paper 140 x 370mm (5½ x 14½"). Mounted on album paper.
The header section of a broadsheet writing sheet. The title "Sword Exercise of of the Cavalry" refers to vignettes down the side, not present here. The Light Horse Volunteers, first formed by well-to-do London merchants in 1779 and disbanded in 1783, were re-established in May 1794 as the Light Horse Volunteers of the Cities of London and Westminster. Their chief role was to suppress civil disobedience. However, as rich men with expensive gear, their reputation as soldiers was not good: the Cato Street Conspiritors planned to raid their stables as part of their plot in 1820.

The Siege of Colchester of 1648, part of the English Civil War, saw a Parliamentary victory led by Sir Thomas Fairfax. Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle were found guilty of High Treason and sentenced to death by firing squad. The claims were that Lucas had executed Parliamentary prisoners in cold blood; that he had broken his parole given by the First Civil War; and that the Royalists had continued to fight in an indefensible position. Within days of their execution, pamphlets were produced pronouncing Lucas and Lisle as martyrs to the Royal cause.

Oblong folio; card wrappers with illustrated title label; 6 lithographed views. Some damp staining.
Six views of Clapham Common, printed by Hullmandel, extremely rare with the original title label on the wrapper. The views are: View from the Mount Pond, on Clapham Common, Looking N.E.; View of the N.E. End of Clapham Common; View from the S.E. Corner of Clapham Common; View of the S.E. End of Clapham Common; View from the Mount Pond, on Clapham Common, Looking S.E.; View from the Nine Elms, on Clapham Common, Looking S.W. Joseph Powell (1780-1834) started as a landscape artist and etcher who embraced all forms of printmaking, an honourary exhibitor at the Royal Academy until 1833 and first president of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours (founded 1831). The drawings were made between 1818-1823 when Joseph Powell was working there. These views show the architecture of Clapham around the common and bordering Wandsworth at the beginning of the 19th Century when livestock is being grazed on the common in front of Holy Trinity Church. It was at this time that William Wilberforce and other member of the "Clapham Sect" lived around the common and worshipped at Holy Trinity. Most of the houses that the Clapham Sect lived in are gone but their names live on in some of the newer roads in the area.

Painted by Gildon Manton. Engraved by Tho.s Lupton.
London, Published Dec.r 1, 1828, by John Murray, Albermarle Street,
Mezzotint on chine collé. 255 x 200mm (10 x 8"), very large margins. Tear entering image repaired, creases, small scuff in title. Bit messy.
Half-length portrait of Bain Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827), in naval uniform. Born in Annan in Scotland, he went to sea at thirteen and was impressed into the Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1810 he was first in the breach at the storming of St Louis on Mauritius, and hauled down the French flag. In 1822 Clapperton joined Walter Oudney and Major Dixon Denham on an expedition to central Africa to trace the river Niger. Oudney died during the journey but Clapperton returned to England in 1825. Convinced that the way to the Niger was via West Africa, he went back that year as commander of a new expedition, but he died in 1827, suffering from malaria, depression, and dysentery. This portrait, after an oil now in the National Gallery of Scotland, was used as the frontispiece of Clapperton's 'Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa in the years 1822–1823 and 1824'.

Justus Claproth (1728 - 1805) was a German jurist, or teacher of law, and inventor of the deinking process of recycled paper. Before the invention of the paper machine in 1799 the most common fibre source was recycled fibres from used textiles. The rags were from hemp, linen and cotton. It was not until the introduction of wood pulp in 1843 that paper production were independent of recycled materials. The process for removing printing inks from recycled paper was invented by Justus Claproth in 1774. He practiced together with German paper producer Johann Engelhard Schmid. Today this method is called deinking.
