Lithograph, printed area 215 x 305mm (8½ x 12"). Tears in margins. Rare.
Distant view of Clifton Hall, Lancashire, built in the 18th century, at the time it was occupied by Benjamin Heywood, one of the founders of Heywood's bank. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced).

[n.d. c.1790.]
Engraving. Plate 180 x 115mm. 7 x 4½". Some light spotting.
General Sir Henry Clinton (1730-1795) was a British army officer and politician, best known for his service as a general during the American War of Independence. His early years in service were in the Seven Years' War and the War of the Austrian Succession. However it was in 1775 when he arrived in Boston and from 1778 to 1782 he was the British Commander-in-Chief in North America. In 1783 he published his 'Narrative of the Campaign of 1781 in North America', in which he attempted to lay the blame for the campaign failures on General Cornwallis. After a short stint as MP for Launceston he accepted promotion to full general and then in 1794 he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar, but he died before he was able to assume the post.

[Unidentified ship, previously thought to be the 'Coonatto']
TGD [artist's monogram T. G. Dutton] 506.
[London, William Foster, 15th July 1863.]
Tinted lithograph with hand colour, proof before letters. Image 405 x 595mm (16 x 23¼").
The Coonatto, a three-masted ship of 633 tons, built in London by Thomas Bilbé in 1863. Used as an Australian wool clipper, the name is an Aboriginal word for a food-bearing tree. In 1876 the Coonatto ran aground on rocks under the Seven Sisters in Sussex, where some of her iron remains can still be seen at low tide. Her captain, Captain Hillman, had his certificate suspended for three months for negligence, although there was speculation he wrecked the Coonatto for insurance money. However as his next ship, the 'Inch Kenneth' foundered the following year, killing Hillman, it would seem he was just inept.

The present house designed by Sir Charles Barry, as a blend of the English Palladian and Roman Cinquecento was built for George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland. In 1893 the estate was purchased by the American billionaire William Waldorf Astor. In 1942, the Astors gave Cliveden to the National Trust but lived there until 1968.
