An equestrian portrait of Charles II before a pre-Fire prospect of London, surrounded by allegorical figures including Mercury and Cupid. Originally published in 1658 it represents the exiled Charles's ambition of regaining his throne. After the Royalist defeat in the Civil War, Cavendish settled in Antwerp, where his treatise on horsemanship, 'La Methode et Invention nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux', was published by Jacob van Meurs c.1658. This example is from the first English edition, 'A General System of Horsemanship in All Its Branches'.

Charles II (1630-1685) had no choice but to flee England following the appointment of Cromwell as Lord Protector, who placed the British Isles under military rule. Despite various family connections, the French and Dutch allied themselves with Cromwell's government, forcing Charles to flee to Spain territories of Southern Netherlands. On the advise of General Monk he left Brussels and travelled to the Netherlands where he made his Declaration and was after wards proclaimed King. He left the Netherlands via The Hague and Schevelingen in May 1660. Anonymous engraving probably Dutch from a Broadside that would have small engravings arranged in rows or alternatively around one central etching.

From a series of 15 copies of early engravings, 'Portraits of Royal Personages', by Turner, Earlom and Dunkarton, issued by Samuel Woodburn in book form in 1816. Charles II (1630-85), king of England, Scotland and Ireland. Charles was king of Scotland from 1649 until his deposition in 1651, after which he was exiled before becoming king at the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Portrait published at the time he became king of Scotland, after van Dyck, by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England after meeting Thomas Howard, second earl of Arundel, in Cologne in 1636.
