The three eldest children of Charles I, standing with two spaniels. On the left is Mary (mother of William III) and on the right is Charles II, both dressed as adults. In the centre is James II, still in skirts as was fashion for infant boys. Van Dyck's first version of this painting (probably commission by their mother, Henrietta Maria) showed both boys in skirts, but Charles I thought his heir should be in more respectful adult clothing. In 1819 this version can be seen hanging in the Second Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace in 'Pyne's Royal Residences'; it is now in the Queen's Gallery, Windsor Castle.

WH fec: 1644.
Etching, text verso; sheet 250 x 195mm (9¾ x 7¾"). Foxing,
Charles I (1600-49) in armour, on horseback, with an army behind him and a city (Berwick-on-Tweed?) in the distance. While this state is dated 1644, the print was first published on a broadside issued in 1639 when Charles advanced to Berwick with an army of which Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, was Commander-in-chief. In this state, the print was the frontispiece to Sir Edward Walker's 'Historical Discourses' (1705), reissued as 'Historical collections' in 1707. Etching by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England after meeting Arundel in Cologne in 1636. Hollar commemorated his patrons role in the campaign against Scotland by etching his portrait on horseback.
