Mary of Modena [1658 - 1718], queen consort of James II. Her marriage (1673) to James, then duke of York, was brought about through the influence of Louis XIV of France. Mary was a devout Roman Catholic and when she bore a son in 1688 fear of a Catholic succession precipitated the Glorious Revolution that overthrew her husband. Marie Eleonor d'Este. Épouse de Jacques II Roy de la Grande Bretagne.
Wander Werff pinxit. J. Audran sculpsit.
[n.d. c.1720.]
Engraving with large margins. Plate 310 x 185mm. 12¼ x 7¼".
Portrait of Mary of Modena, wife of King James II; bust and shoulders in frontal view, in a laurel oval on a pedestal draped with a curtain, a crown at left. Illustration to fourth volume (facing page 478) of Isaac de Larrey's "Histoire d'Angleterre, d'Ecosse et d'Irlande" (Rotterdam: 1697-1713). Mary of Modena (1658-1718) was the Roman Catholic Queen of James II. She dedicated herself to the conversion of England, but her support of her husband's pro-Catholic policies made her unpopular. The fear of a Catholic succession to the throne, caused by the birth of their son James Francis Edward in 1668, led to the invitation of William of Orange to England.

James Duke of Monmouth. Mortuus 15 July 1685. Ætat 36.
James Duke of Monmouth. Mortuus 15 July 1685. Ætat 36. The Gods from Heaven survey the fatal Strife And mourn the Miseries of human Life.
From a Painting by Netcher and Wyke, in the Collection of W.m Baillie Esq.r. W.Baillie fec. 30 Sept. 1774.
Mezzotint with text printed from separate plate, sheet 400 x 410mm (15¾ x 16"). Trimmed; two vertical folds.
James Scott, duke of Monmouth and the first duke of Buccleuch (1649-1685), politician and illegitimate son of Charles II, on horseback, with the Battle of Sedgemoor (6 July 1785) in the background. The Battle of Sedgemoor, fought near Bridgwater in Somerset, was the last act of the Monmouth Rebellion (in which Monmouth attempted unsuccessfully to depose his uncle, King James II). Monmouth's men were routed, and although Monmouth himself escaped, he was found hiding in a ditch two days later. He was taken back to London, imprisoned in the Tower, and executed a few days later. Monmouth was allowed to be beheaded rather than the usual method of hanging, but the executioner took five strokes of the axe to sever the head; after the first stroke Monmouth was said to have raised his head in anguish.

[Anon. German, c.1690]
Rare engraving, sheet 190 x 305mm (7½ x 12"). Trimmed, losing text key to numbers in image, and glued to backing sheet.
Figure being beheaded on a scaffold with large crowd in attendance; oval portraits of James Scott, first duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch (1649 -1685), illegitimate son of Charles II, and his confederate Archibald Campbell, ninth Earl of Argyll (1629 - 1685), politician and clan leader. The scene shows the execution of Monmouth, who was beheaded rather than hanged (the more common form of execution) at the king's agreement. Even though Monmouth paid his executioner well, however, he did his job poorly and took five strokes to sever Monmouth's head from his body. After the first stroke Monmouth was reportedly seen to raise his head in anguish.

[London: S. Woodburn, 1813-1814.]
Mezzotint, proof before all letters on india laid paper, 355 x 265mm. 14 x 10½". A fine, rich impression.
Henry Frederick Stuart (1594 - 1612), first child of King James VI of Scotland (later King James I of England) and Anne of Denmark, was born on February 19, 1594, at Stirling Castle in Scotland. The pride of his parents, the heir apparent was groomed for kingship from the beginning. Henry was created Prince of Wales at Westminster in June 1610, the paragon of a prince: he was intelligent, well read, an excellent swordsman, an avid patron of the arts, and possessed of a strict sense of morality. In November 1612 Henry suddenly took ill and died, probably of typhoid fever, though rumours circulated that the Prince was poisoned. Here he is depicted in armour during a lance drill, a jousting tournament in the background. A copy of the engraving by Willem de Passe, by Robert Dunkarton (1744 - c. 1815). From a series of 15 copies of early engravings, 'Portraits of Royal Personages', by Turner, Earlom and Dunkarton, issued by Samuel Woodburn in book form in 1816. Another edition was published in 1830.
