Captain George Francis Lyon (1795-1832) went to sea at the age of thirteen and wrote and illustrated books on his travels, which included crossing the Sahara, serving under Parry as commander of the 'Hecla' and following Frankin into Hudson's Bay. [c.1825.]
Lithograph. Printed area 295 x 250mm, 11½ x 9¾". Publisher's blind stamp under title. Cut.
Head and shoulders portrait of Ali Pasha (1740-1822), the Ottoman Albanian ruler, surnamed Aslan, 'the Lion', or the 'Lion of Yannina', who fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire. His cruelty has become legendary. Byron visited Ali's court in Ioánnina in 1809 and wrote to his mother: 'His Highness is a remorseless tyrant, guilty of the most horrible cruelties, very brave, so good a general that they call him the Mahometan Buonaparte ... but as barbarous as he is successful, roasting rebels, etc, etc.'. Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse (1784-1844) appears to have painted this portrait after Ali's death.

Ali Pasha (1740-1822), the Lion of Yannina, a Muslim Albanian ruler who served as an Ottoman pasha of the western part of Rumelia, the Ottoman Empire's European territory. A cruel ruler, he set about creating an almost-independent Greek-speaking state, allying himself with Napoleon, the British and whoever would serve him best. He eventually irked Sultan Mahmud II enough to send an army to bring him back under Ottoman control. Accepting the offer of a pardon he retired to a monastery, but soldiers were sent to arrest him for execution. Aged 82 he died fighting, shot through the floor of his room then beheaded.

I. Basire Sculp.
For Mr Tindal's Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England. [London, James & Paul Knapton, 1751.]
Engraved map. 390 x 480mm (15¼ x 19"). Very fine impression with original binding folds.
The city of Alicante under siege by the French Marshal Claude François Bidal d'Asfeld during the War of the Spanish Succession. The British general John Richards refused to surrender, and the French put a massive mine under the city walls, which exploded killing Richards and 50 others on the 3rd March. The British and Huguenot garrison held out for another six weeks before Admiral Sir George Byng arrived and evacuated the survivors. Nicholas Tindal (1687-1774), at one time Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital, first published a translation of Frenchman Paul de Rapin's 'History of England' in 1727, running to thirteen volumes; in 1732 it was enlarged with his own notes and maps. This map was published in 'A summary of Mr Rapin de Thoyras's History of England, and Mr Tindal's Continuation, from the Invasion of Julius Caesar, to the End of the Reign of King George I. Illustrated With Medals, Plans of Battles, Towns, and Sieges', 1751.
