[Paris: L'Imprimerie de la Republique, An V, 1797.]
Engraving. 390 x 560mm, 15½ x 22".
Tombs near Castries Bay in Tartary, named after the French minister of marine who had sent La Perouse on his mission. In 1785 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88) was sent by the French to continue Cook's exploration work in the Pacific, in the ships 'Astrolabe' & 'Boussole'. After three years, during which time he visited Chile, California, Alaska, Kamchatka, the Philippines, Japan and Hawaii, he travelled to Australia. Outside Botany Bay he met up with Captain Arthur Phillip's First Fleet, after which he set sail and was never seen again, despite an extensive rescue mission. Fortunately La Pérouse took every oportunity to send his work back to France: one crew member disembarked in Kamchatka and spent a year crossing Siberia back to France; later journals, charts and letters he left with the British at Botany Bay. Thus his discoveries were not lost with him, but published posthumously in this work, 'Voyage de la Perouse autour du monde..'.

Königlich Baierischer Gemälde-Saal zu München und Schleissheim in Steindruck. [A cat in the larder.]
Hamilton pinx: [Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton] C: Auer del:
[German, Munich?, n.d., c.1823.]
Early and scarce sepia-tinted lithograph, heightened in white. Image 455 x 335mm, 18 x 13¼". Outline border. One repair and minor creasing in margins.
A large dead hare strung up by its legs dominates the centre of the composition; dead birds including tits, finches, thrush and partridge. After Philip Ferdinand Van Hamilton (Flemish, c.1664 - 1750). The engraver is Kaspar Auer (German, 1795 - 1821). This plate formed part of a series of lithographed reproductions after paintings in the royal collection in Munich. "At this early stage lithography had not been developed far enough to reproduce colours, so the artists contented themselves with the addition of one or two tint-stones, from which highlights were scraped out to reveal the white of the paper. But to a public educated on the traditional type of 'gallery' publication, where all the paintings were reproduced in engraving, even this touch of colour would have been a surprise, and would have associated these prints rather with the traditional chiaroscuro woodcut." As a player of Scotch dance music, especially of reels and strathspeys, Gow was in his time without superior or rival. He recieved an annuity from the Duke and Duchess of Atholl and regularly played at Dunkeld House and Blair Atholl. He composed a large number of melodies, nearly a hundred of which are included in the volumes published by his son Nathaniel. Four portraits of Gow were painted by Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823).
