Half-length portrait of Christopher Carleill (c. 1551-93), English military and naval commander, step-son of Elizabeth I's spymaster Francis Walsingham. This print celebrates his command of English troops helping defend Steenwijk against the Spanish (1580-1). In 1582 he commanded a convoy of English merchants to Russia when that country was at war with Denmark. In 1584 he was given command of the garrison of Coleraine, County Antrim, but was recalled the following year. In 1585 he was lieutenant-general of the land forces that accompanied Francis Drake on his expedition against Santo Domingo: the expedition plundered Santiago in the Cape Verde Islands, seized Santo Domingo, Cartagena de Indias and St. Augustine. On the return voyage they visited Sir Walter Raleigh's colony at Roanoke, Virginia. In 1588 he was appointed constable of Carrickfergus, County Antrim, then governor of Ulster. The portrait is from a set of English admirals all engraved by Boissard.

Sir Guy Carleton.

Portrait of Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester KB (1724 - 1808), known between 1776 and 1786 as Sir Guy Carleton, was a British Army officer, peer and colonial administrator. He twice served as Governor of the Province of Quebec, from 1768 to 1778, concurrently serving as Governor General of British North America in that time, and again from 1785 to 1795. The title Baron Dorchester was created on 21 August 1786. He commanded British troops in the American Revolutionary War, first leading the defence of Quebec during the 1775 rebel invasion, and the 1776 counteroffensive that drove the rebels from the province. In 1782 and 1783, he led as the commander-in-chief of all British forces in North America. In this capacity he was notable for carrying out the Crown's promise of freedom to slaves who joined the British, and he oversaw the evacuation of British forces, Loyalists and more than 3,000 freedmen from New York City in 1783 to transport them to a British colony. Toward this end, Carleton assigned Samuel Birch to create the Book of Negroes. The military and political career of his younger brother, Thomas Carleton, was interwoven with his own, and Thomas served under him in the Canadas.

Mary Carleton (neé Moders, 1642-73), bigamist and fraudster who often pretended to be a German princess (having lived in Cologne) or an heiress. Having defrauded many men over more than ten years, she was convicted and hanged. This scene shows her with a different con: having attracted a rich lawyer as a lover, her 'husband' bursts in with an armed servant and extorts £100 from the lawyer. Probably from 'History of the Lives of the Most Notorious Highwaymen' by Captain Alexander Smith (pseud.), although examples of this print were issued as a broadside with letterpress.

Carlo III (1486-1553), duke of Savoy, often called 'il Buono' ('the good'). Carlo was a younger son of of Filippo II (see ref. 41068), who having spent much of his life without possessions, unexpectedly became duke shortly before his death owing to the death in childhood of Carlo II (see ref. 41067). This made Carlo duke following the death of his father's half-brother Filiberto II in 1504. After France invaded Savoy in 1535 and held almost all of Carlo's possessions, he spent the rest of his life in near-exile. After F.J. de Lange, it is one of the 33 portraits of the Dukes of Savoy engraved by Georges Tasnière for 'Augustae Regiæque Sabaudæ domus arbor gentilitia', 1702.

The Infante Carlos of Spain (1788-1855), son of Charles IV of Spain and first of the Carlist claimants to the Spanish throne. Shortly before his death, Carlos' brother king Ferdinand VII had changed the law (the 'Pragmatic Sanction') to permit his daughter Isabella to succeed to the throne. Carlos' claim to the throne was founded upon the illegality of the Pragmatic Sanction. From this dispute the First Carlist War took place in the 1830s, only definitively concluding in 1840, by which time Carlos had left Spain for France. From a series of portraits of European monarchs by lithographer Antoine Maurin dit l'aîné (1793 - 1860).

A pair of portraits of Maria Manuela (1527-45), Princess of Portugal and wife of Philip II of Spain, and their son Don Carlos (1545-68), who decended into insanity within his short life. The title of the portrait of Carlos describes Philip II as king of England, dating it to the duration of his marriage to Mary I, 1554 to 1558. From a series of 39 'Portraits of European Rulers', engraved by van der Heyden, Frans Huys and Jan Collaert. The British Museum's description of the series notes 'Most of these portraits are engraved two on a plate, but the pairs have almost always been cut apart'.

Carlton House.

From 1783 to 1826, Carlton House, in St James's between Pall Mall and The Mall, served as the palatial London residence of the Prince of Wales. There, as Prince and later Prince Regent, George IV lived and entertained lavishly. The Prince decorated Carlton House sparing no expense. 'How sick one shall be, after this chaste palace, of Mr Adam's gingerbread and snippets of embroidery.' Thus wrote Horace Walpole to Lady Ossory in 1785 describing a visit. Carlton House was demolished in 1825 and replaced with two grand white stuccoed terraces of expensive houses known as Carlton House Terrace. The proceeds of the leases were put towards the cost of Buckingham Palace. From 'A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster, illustrated With the most interesting Views, accurately delineated And executed in Aquatinta by Thomas Malton', 1792 - 1801. Thomas Malton (1748 - 1804) was an architectural watercolourist and teacher of Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner; also an aquatinter, notably after his own designs of London views.

Carlton House, London., designs of the trophies for the pediments, panels over the doors, pateras and trophies over the columns and pilasters; Volume I, part 5, "Works in Architecture". Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57, Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi, which was inspirational for both men. Upon his return, the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London, which although not a commercial success at the time, included one of London's most cherished buildings, the Adlephi Theatre. Together, the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England, including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House, Keddlestone Manor, and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses, the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches, lunettes, festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house, an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square, and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'. The work was published in three volumes over an extended span of time, beginning in 1773, with the final volume being published posthumously in 1822.

A plate from Ackermann's 'Microcosm of London' (1808-9), a landmark publication in the documentation of London, bringing together two specialist artists, Thomas Rowlandson to design the figures and Augustus Pugin to provide the architectural draughtsmanship. The result was a series of scenes unprecedented in their combination of vivid activity and architectual accuracy.

Portrait of James Carmichael-Smyth (1779-1838), army officer and colonial governor. After briefly acting as colonial secretary following the surrender of the Cape of Good Hope, Carmichael served at Coruna, and in Scotland and the Netherlands (including the defence against the 1815 French invasion. On Wellington's recommendation he was made a baronet in 1823, and published several books on military and colonial subjects. In 1829 he was appointed governor of the Bahamas,during which time he abolished the flogging of female slaves. In 1833 he was transferred to the 'more important' governorship of British Guiana, in which he position he was still serving when he died suddenly 'of brain fever' in 1838.

Female figure holding lyre and trumpet surrounded by putti representing the arts. One sculpts a bust of Jean Commire (1625-1702), the French Jesuit theologian and writer to whose 'Carminum', book three (1678) this is the frontispiece. It was engraved after a design by painter Henri Watelé (1640-77) by Gérard Edelinck (bap.1640-1707), French engraver of Flemish origin who is considered one of the greatest 17th century engravers and reproduced the work of important portraitists of the day such as Rigaud and Largilliere.

Portrait of Sir James Rivett Carnac, 1st Bt (1785 - 1846), Governor of Bombay, India. Bombay-born Carnac joined the East India Company in 1801 as a Cadet in the Madras Native Infantry. In 1802 he was appointed aide-de-camp to the Governor of Bombay and spent the next seventeen years working for the British administration in India. In 1822 he retired from the Indian service and went to England. In 1827 he was elected as Director of the East India Company, and from 1835 to 1838 served first as Deputy Chairman and then as Chairman. He became a Whig MP in 1837, but was offered the Governorship of Bombay soon after and resigned his seat the following year. He arrived in Bombay in 1839. However, less than two years into his post, his health faltered and in 1841 he resigned and left India for good.

However, the King's ministers did not agree to divorce, and instead entered into negotiations with Caroline. She rejected this offer and a trial began, which only increased public support for her.

Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, later Queen Caroline (1768 - 1821), was the wife of George IV from 1795, and his queen consort from 29 January 1820 until her death. Shortly after giving birth to Princess Charlotte of Wales, Caroline and George separated, and after she moved to Italy in 1814 rumours surrounding her relationship with her servant Bartolomeo Pergami (also spelt Bergami) culminated in her trial for adultery in 1820.

Caroline Matilda (1751-75), posthumous daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and sister of George III. She married her cousin, Christian VII of Denmark, at fifteen, an unhappy union. In 1772 they divorced and she spent the rest of her life in Hanover, never seeing her children again.
