Probably from a drawing by Thomas Phillips made at the time of the visit of the Allied Sovereigns to England in June 1814 to celebrate the Peace of Paris. In 1817 Phillips (who also had the rare distinction of having painted Napoleon from life, in 1802) painted a large canvas (now in Petworth House, Sussex) commemorating the event, showing Alexander.

A series of eight vignettes illustrating the activities of Tsar Alexander I during his visit to London in June 1814. Alexander insisted on staying in the Pulteney Hotel where his sister, the Duchess of Oldenburg had taken up residence. The Duchess is shown wearing her poke-bonnet in a style which became known as an Oldenburgh bonnet. This is a companion to BM Satire 12291 which depicts a day spent by George IV. BM Satire 12290.

Alexander II (1818-81), Emperor of Russia. Known as 'Alexander the Liberator' for his emancipation of Russia's serfs in 1861, Alexander also carried out many other reforms. He oversaw the sale of Alaska to the United States, fought a brief war with Turkey in 1877-8, and incorporated Poland into Russia in response to the uprising of 1863. He was assassinated by revolutionaries in 1881.

Alexander III (1845-94), Emperor of Russia, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland, as a Tsesarivich (heir apparent). Three years after this portrait was published, Alexander succeeded his father Alexander II as emperor, ruling the country in a highly conservative way, reversing some of his father's liberal reforms but also avoiding Russian involvement in any major wars.

Stipple, printed in sepia, faint watermark. 565 x 715mm (21¾ x 28¼") with very wide margins. Damage to margins, margin rebuilt in the top left corner.
Colin Fitzgerald pulls the antler of a stag and raises his spear to kill it. Other huntsmen rush to the aid of the fallen king. Alexander (1241-86) may have survived this episode, but he died aged 44 falling from a horse. His heir was his granddaughter, Margaret, Maid of Norway, but she died before she could be crowned, leaving the throne of Scotland to John Balliol.

The famous scene of Alexander the Great drinking a potion prepared by Philip of Acarnania, despite being warned by Parmenion that his physician had been bribed by Darius III to poison him, showing his trust in his friend. The scene is presented within an elaborate baroque architectural surround. In 1732 Samuel Sympson advertised for sale a volume of '164 different designs of the celebrated Master Le Potre' [Jean Lepautre] ... The said Mr Sympson having purchased the plates from France, the prints will be sold at a very low rate'. Sympson moved to Maiden Lane soon afterwards.
