Elizabeth Hamilton [née Gunning], duchess of Hamilton and Brandon (1733-90), courtier. She first met James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton and Argyll, at a party in January 1752 and they married the following month at a chapel in Curzon Street, Mayfair. The duke had forgotten to bring a ring so married her with a bed-curtain ring fetched from his house. The duke brought Elizabeth back to Scotland where, dividing their time between Edinburgh and Hamilton, they were at the centre of Scottish society. The duke died in 1758 after catching a chill while out hunting and Elizabeth remarried the following year, to 'Handsome Jack Campbell' (1723-1806), a professional soldier. When George III married Princess Charlotte in 1761, Elizabeth was chosen as one of the ladies of the bedchamber, and became a figure of real significance in the household of Queen Charlotte. John Campbell (1680-1743), army officer and politician. Commissioner for negotiating Union with Scotland in 1705, Campbell served with distinction at Ramillies, Oudenard, Malplaquet and other battlefields in the War of the Spanish Succession. In 'the Fifteen', Argyll led the government army at Sheriffmuir and defeated the Jacobites led by the Earl of Mar. He was Master General of the Ordnance from 1725-1740 and was promoted to Field Marshal in 1736. In 1742, a year before his death, he was given the position of Commander in Chief of the British Army. Engraved after the full-length portrait by Allan Ramsay (Inverary Castle).

Bust portrait of army officer and politician John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll (1678-1743), in an architectural oval; below armour and a cartouche with coat of arms, with objects surrounding; swords, fabric, cannon balls, pikes/spears and a helmet. He wears armour with as sash going across and a long wig. From the series Birch's heads. In the mid-eighteenth century, the British historian Thomas Birch (1705 - 1766) published a series of short biographies of famous figures from his nation’s past. Accompanying each of the 108 biographies was an engraved portrait of the subject, whose likeness was presented within an elaborate decorative setting. These ornamental frames were designed by Hubert-François Bourguignon (1699 - 1773)—commonly known as Gravelot—a Parisian artist then working in London. After finishing the drawing, Gravelot sent sheets to Amsterdam. There, the Dutch printmaker Jacob Houbraken (1698 - 1780) created the final image by combining Gravelot’s design with portraits. Campbell was instrumental in the union of Scotland with England; 1708-10, general under Marlborough in War of Spanish Succession; led the army supporting the Hanoverian cause in Scotland against the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion; supported Walpole until the aftermath of the Porteousriots when he voted against the reprisals on Edinburgh; 1741, led the successful opposition to Walpole in Scottish elections, but resigned all offices himself in 1742. Mary Meredith (d.1807), wife of Lord Frederick Cambell, her second husband. She became famous for obtaining a divorce from her first husband, Laurence Shirley (1720-60), 4th Earl Ferrers, on the grounds of cruelty. Ferrers became the last peer to be hanged, for the muder of his steward, who is said to have stood witness for his wife in the divorce. Ferres was hanged at Tyburn, cursing his wife that she should experience a death more painful than his own. She died a very torturous death, in a fire in the tower of Combe Bank, after which all that could be found of her a bone of her thumb. Her ghost is said to still haunt the grounds.

The Battle of Camperdown (11 October 1797) was a British naval victory in the North Sea over the Dutch during the French Revolutionary Wars. The British fleet under Admiral Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet under Admiral de Winter off the coastal village of Camperduin, north-west of Alkmaar. Each vessel in the composition is captioned in the lower margin. List of English and Dutch ships to left and right of title. After Robert Cleveley (1747 - 1809).

A post-boy holds out a scroll, 'Account of the Total Defeat of the Dutch Fleet' to a Dutch council. The president complains that the English have taken the Dutch colonies and now had destroyed their fleet. On the table is a map of France with Holland marked as 'Department 85', and the 'Plan of the Invasions of England Ireland Scotland the Cape of Good hope Gibralter East & West Indies China &c. &c. &c. &c.'. Admiral Jan Willem de Winter had been coerced by the French to go to sea to attack Edinburgh and Glasgow then land in the north of Ireland. British Admiral Adam Duncan put paid to the scheme with a superb victory at Camperdown on the 11th October. This satire was published only four days later.

The Remonstrant pastor and poet Camphuysen was not too keen on portraits: ‘this lifeless thing/ but a shadow of its real self' was part of a verse he wrote on portrait paintings. The portrait is framed by the symbols for Faith, Hope and Love; cherubs seated on clouds to the upper right reading, and upper left playing a violin and cello. Dirk Rafelsz Camphuysen (1586-1627) was a Dutch painter, poet and theologian. He was working in Leiden and Amersfoort. He was better known as a preacher and poet.

A view of the city with an ox cart in the foreground. A plate from Hamilton's famous work on Italian volcanos, the 'Campi Phlegraei'. Hamilton was 'Envoy Extraordinary to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies' in Naples from 1764 until 1800, during which time he published books on his two favourite subjects, classical vases and vulcanology. He and Fabris visited both Etna and Vesuvius, often risking their lives to record volcanic events. The resulting book of 1776, the rare 'Campi Phlegraei', with a supplement of 1779, is regarded as one of the best colour-plate books of the 18th century.

From Walter William May's 'Series of Fourteeen Sketches Made During the Voyage up Wellington Channel in Search of Sir John Franklin'. Under Sir Edward Belcher five ships entered the Arctic to search for Franklin and the crews of the 'Erebus' and 'Terror', missing from an earlier expedition. Four out of the five vessels were abandoned in pack ice, for which Belcher was court-martialled, but acquitted.
