A view of St. John's from the river Cam. Alfred J Bennett (1861 - 1923) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolour and etching. He worked as a jeweller whilst also regularly submitting paintings to the Royal Academy of which four were exhibited between 1861-1880. After this success, Bennett left the jewellery trade to concentrate on his art. Bennett exhibited extensively, regularly contributing work to the Royal Watercolour Society and British Institution exhibitions, the RA, Walker's Gallery in New Bond Street, Fine Art Society, New English Art Club, Grosvenor Gallery, International Society, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

Manuscript signed diploma on vellum, illuminated in gold leaf and vivid bodycolour, decorative floral border. 655 x 480mm, 25¾ x 19". Fine condition.
A wonderfully decorative certificate presented to Thomas Percy Pemberton on the occasion of his retirement as President of the Cambridge University Musical Society. It is signed by some of the members. CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished university music societies in the world. The Society has played a pivotal role in British musical life for 165 years. It has helped to launch the careers of such luminaries as Sir Andrew Davis, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Mark Elder, has given world premières of works by Britten, Lutoslwski, Rutter, Holloway, Peter Maxwell Davies and Saxton, and has exposed successive generations of Cambridge musicians to visiting conductors and soloists including Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Britten and Menuhin. The hand painted border, the vibrant colour unfaded, includes armorial crests, and the badge of the Society at top.

Portrait of William Camden (1550-1623), historian and herald, known for his 'Britannia' (1586), a copy of which his hands rest upon here. Engraved by Richard Gaywood as a plate to Sylvanus Morgan's 'Sphere of Gentry' (1661). The work consisted of four 'books', of which Josephs's Coat was the second, to which this was presumably the frontispiece. This engraving was taken from a portrait of Camden which was destroyed in the great fire of London in 1666. However, when Morgan became master of the Painter-Stainers' Company in 1676, he presented the company with a portrait of Camden (a former benefactor of the Painter-Stainers), worked up in turn from the Gaywood engraving. That portrait still hangs in the Painter-Stainers' hall.

William Camden (1551-1623), English antiquarian, historian, and officer of arms. He wrote the first topographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland and the first detailed historical account of the reign of Elizabeth I of England. In 1566 he entered Oxford, transferring from Magdalen College, to Broadgates Hall, and finally to Christ Church. At Christ Church he encountered Philip Sidney, who encouraged Camden's thirst for antiquaries. In 1571 he returned to London without a degree, but soon took up post as Usher of Westminster School, giving him freedom to travel and pursue his antiquarian researches.
