The Battle of Camperdown (11 October 1797) was a British naval victory in the North Sea over the Dutch during the French Revolutionary Wars. The British fleet under Admiral Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet under Admiral de Winter off the coastal village of Camperduin, north-west of Alkmaar. Each vessel in the composition is captioned in the lower margin. List of English and Dutch ships to left and right of title. After Robert Cleveley (1747 - 1809). Parker 1413.

A post-boy holds out a scroll, 'Account of the Total Defeat of the Dutch Fleet' to a Dutch council. The president complains that the English have taken the Dutch colonies and now had destroyed their fleet. On the table is a map of France with Holland marked as 'Department 85', and the 'Plan of the Invasions of England Ireland Scotland the Cape of Good hope Gibralter East & West Indies China &c. &c. &c. &c.'. Admiral Jan Willem de Winter had been coerced by the French to go to sea to attack Edinburgh and Glasgow then land in the north of Ireland. British Admiral Adam Duncan put paid to the scheme with a superb victory at Camperdown on the 11th October. This satire was published only four days later.

The Remonstrant pastor and poet Camphuysen was not too keen on portraits: this lifeless thing/ but a shadow of its real self' was part of a verse he wrote on portrait paintings. The portrait is framed by the symbols for Faith, Hope and Love; cherubs seated on clouds to the upper right reading, and upper left playing a violin and cello. Dirk Rafelsz Camphuysen (1586-1627) was a Dutch painter, poet and theologian. He was working in Leiden and Amersfoort. He was better known as a preacher and poet.

Scene at an ice skating festival. Costumed ice skaters circle around a pole. Arthur Hopkins (18481930) was a landscape and genre painter and a skilled illustrator. A member of the Royal Watercolour Society, he exhibited frequently with it, the Royal Academy, and other major London institutions. His greatest success came from his illustration work, featured in the London News (18721898), The Graphic (18741876), and Punch (18931902), as well as in books by Thomas Hardy and Wilkie Collins.

This plate, one of only three mezzotint plates in the work, shows Inuit igloos on the Boothia Peninsula. Ross named the area after his patron Felix Booth, and located the North Magnetic Pole there. A view of the town of Guelph, Canada, with a woman standing in the foreground, looking out towards the town, with a dog by her side. A bridge is seen across a river to the left, with various buildings distributed in the distance. Guelph was selected as the headquarters of British development firm 'the Canada Company' by its first superintendent John Galt, a popular Scottish novelist who designed the town to attract settlers to it and the surrounding countryside. Galt designed the town to resemble a European city centre, complete with squares, broad main streets and narrow side streets, resulting in a variety of block sizes and shapes. A Canada Lynx, a wild cat of Canada and the Rocky Mountains south to Colorado. From 'Zoological Sketches by Joseph Wolf. Made for the Zoological Society of London, from animals in their vivarium, in the Regent's Park', issued in two parts, 1861 and 1867. Joseph Wolf (1820-99), a German artist, specialized in natural history illustration, and is considered one of the great pioneers of wildlife art, having depicted animals accurately in lifelike postures. He worked with John Gould on 'The Birds of Great Britain'. Sir Edwin Landseer considered him 'without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived'.
