The third plate shows the Viscount at a doctor, accompanied by his child mistress. The older woman holding a clasp knife appears to be the young girl's mother. The machines to the right are described in the open book, and are for setting a broken shoulder, and drawing corks. Earlom's six mezzotints for the Marriage à la Mode set were published one at a time from 1795 to 1800. They were then sold via subscription through Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery.

Mary Magdalen Washing Christ's Feet.
Mary Magdalen Washing Christ's Feet. In the Salon at Houghton.
Rubens Pinxit. G Farington delin.t. Rich.d Earlom sculpsit.
John Boydell excudit 1777. Published Aug.st 1st 1777 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London.
Mezzotint. 470 x 580mm (18½ x 22¾"). Trimmed within plate at bottom, thread margins elsewhere chipped. Crease top right.
Peter Paul Ruben's 'Feast in the House of Simon the Pharisee', painted in Flanders circa 1618-20, representing the conflict between the material values and religious dogmatism of the Pharisees world and the Christian doctrine of sympathy, charity and goodness. Here the repentant sinner washing Christ's feet with her tears is named as Mary Magdalene; however the Gospel of Luke leaves her nameless. At the time of this engraving the painting was part of the art collection of Sir Horace Walpole (1676-1745) at Houghton, Norfolk. Following his death part of the collection was sold to pay off debts, and by the 1770s it was inevitable the rest would suffer the same fate. Before it could be dispersed John Boydell commissioned a vast series of mezzotints of the collection, which was fortuitous: despite John Wilkes attempt to persuade Parliament to buy the collection for the nation 206 paintings were sold to Catherine the Great for £40,550 in 1779. 127 works from Houghton, including this one, are now in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.

London Published by S. Woodburn, 1811.
A fine mezzotint impression. Image 158 x 108mm. Cut to the image and surrounded by an extra paper sheet.
Sir William Penn (1621-1670) was an English admiral, and the father of William Penn, founder of the colony of Pennsylvania. He served his apprenticeship at sea with his father. In the first Civil War he fought on the side of the parliament, and was in command of a ship in the squadron maintained against the king in the Irish seas. The service was arduous and called for both energy and good seamanship. In 1648 he was arrested and sent to London, but was soon released, and sent back as rear admiral in the Assurance. The exact cause of the arrest is unknown, but it may be presumed to have been that he was suspected of being in correspondence with the king's supporters. In the First Anglo-Dutch War, he served in the navy of the Commonwealth of England, commanding squadrons at the battles of the Kentish Knock (1652), Portland, the Gabbard and Scheveningen (1653). In 1654 he accepted the naval command in the expedition to the West Indies sent out by Cromwell. In 1655 he commanded the fleet that launched a bungled attack on La Hispaniola. Afterwards the less desirable island of Jamaica was seized for the Commonwealth regime. On their return he and his military colleague Venables were sent to the Tower. He made humble submission, and when released retired to the estate he had received from confiscated land in Ireland. In the Second Anglo-Dutch War he was captain of the fleet at the Battle of Lowestoft in 1665 under James Stuart, Duke of York.

Published Aug.t 1st 1774 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside.
Mezzotint with etched lines, printed in sepia. 210 x 260mm, 8½ x 10¼". Uncut, with large margins, slight soiling of margins.
St Peter being delivered from Herod's prison by an angel. Engraved by Richard Earlom (1743 - 1822) after a sketch in the copy of Claude le Lorrain's 'Liber Veritatis' owned by the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth. Claude (c.1600-82) was a prolific and successful landscape painter, and, even during his lifetime, forgeries of his work appeared for sale. To combat this Claude made up six albums of tinted sketches of his completed works, each sketch with the name of the purchaser of the painting on the back. The 'Liber Veritatis' (Book of Truth) was then distributed around Europe so that his genuine paintings could be authenticated. The Chatsworth copy of the 'Liber Veritatis' contained 200 drawings, including a frontispiece portrait of Claude and five unrelated drawings. Commissioned by John Boydell, Richard Earlom engraved the full set between 1774 and 1777, when they were published by Boydell in two volumes, each containing 100 prints, numbered 1-200. A third volume of 100 prints was published by Boydell in 1819, which was numbered separately, containing mezzotints by Earlom after other drawings by Claude in various collections.

Sir Charles Thompson, 1st Baronet (c.1740-99), naval officer. After long service in the Seven Years' War, American War of Independence (fighting at the Battle of the Chesapeaks) and War of the First Coalition, he was Admiral John Jervis's second in command at the battle of Cape St Vincent. However, his disregard for Jervis's signal to tack to counter a Spanish attacking move nearly lost the battle, and began an enmity with Jervis that eventually led to Thompson's retirement. Thornton had two plates engraved (the other by William Ward), an extravagence that helped Thornton into bankruptcy.
