Roger Monk Esq.r Exon of His Majesty's Yeoman of the Guard, on duty at the Coronation of George IVth.
Painted by W. Pickersgill R.A. Drawn on Stone by Tho.s Fairland.
R. Martin, Lithog. 124. High Holborn [n.d., c.1820.]
Lithograph with superb hand colour, J. Whatman 1827 watermark. Printed area 390 x 240mm (15¼ x 9¼"), with very large margins. Sellotape stain in upper right margin.
A full length portrait of Roger Monk (d.1831) in the Tudor-style uniform of the Yeoman of the Guard (Beefeaters). A London businessman, he purchased a commission in the Guards, becoming Exon (equivalent to Corporal but in the Elizabethan meaning of a commissioned officer, similar to a captain) in 1805, holding the position until his death. Monk's uniform cost over £300 and was the last of its kind to be made for officers, being too expensive for the few ceremonial occasions for its use. Monk commissioned this oil, which now hangs in the hall of the Tallow Chandlers' Company, of which Monk had been master in 1826.

[Als from Edward Nicholas to Montagu Bertie, Baron Willoughby de Eresby.]
Whitehall 11 May 1640.
1pp. als in ink, folded with wax seal, addressed in the same hand, scarce. Later ink mss. description.
A manuscript letter from Sir Edward Nicholas (1593-1669) at the time a clerk in ordinary to Charles I's Privy Council. As one of Charles's most trusted advisors he helped negotiate the Treaty of Uxbridge (1645), Charles's surrender to the Scots and the Surrender of Oxford (both 1646). He continued to serve Charles II in exile, becoming secretary of state in 1654, a role he kept after the Restoration. The letter is written to Montagu Bertie (1608-66), the year he became Baron Willoughby de Eresby, probably for raising 'The King's Life Guard of Foot' for service in the First Bishops' War of 1639. He fought at the First Battle of Newbury, Cropredy Bridge, Lostwithiel, Second Battle of Newbury and was wounded at Naseby. At the Restoration he officiated as Lord Great Chamberlain at the coronation of Charles II on 23 April 1661.

Pub July 8 1830 by T. McLean 26 Haymarket London.
Framed hand-coloured etching. Frame dimensions 260 x 365mm (10¼ x 14¼). Unexamined outside of frame. Probably trimmed.

To the right is Wellington, standing over the royal chair in the Council Chamber, with William IV sitting to the side. Behind are the Grenadier Guards, standing to attention with bayonets fixed. When William IV came to the throne in 1830, Victoria was the next in line to the throne, aged 11, raising the question of who would be regent if William died before Victoria came of age. Heath had previously issued his work under the pseudonym 'Paul Pry' but reverted to his own name because of fakers.
