Edmund Burke (1729-1797); Frontispiece to "Memoirs of Edmund Burke" 1798; Politician (in parliament from 1766) and writer, best remembered for "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful" (1757) and "Reflections on the Revolution in France" (1790), a founding text for modern political conservatism; its reference to "the swinish multitude" was frequently quoted in radical contexts.

Head and shoulders portrait of James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormond (1665-1745), wearing long wig, lace cravat, chain and St George, and robes with a ribbon on the shoulder. Butler was an army officer and politician, born Dublin Castle; succeeded his grandfather James Butler as Duke of Ormond. Jacobite, though reconciled to William III and fought at the battle of the Boyne. He was involved in the 1715 rebellion against the Hanoverians and thereafter lived in exile.

Henry Carey, 2nd Earl of Monmouth (1595-1661) was an English nobleman and translator. He served four terms as a Member of Parliament, representing Camelford, Beverley, Tregony and St Mawes between 1621 and 1626. After taking his seat in the Lords in 1639 he played little part in the upheaval of his times, although he spoke in the House of Lords in June 1641 on the bill for depriving the bishops of their seats in parliament.

Almost half-length portrait of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville (1690-1763), in an oval. Looking towards the viewer, wearing robes trimmed with fur, a broad white fur collar, plain white cravat, cape tied to left shoulder with a large bow, and long wig. Below a crest with the motto 'Loyal Devior'. Carteret was appointed ambassador-extraordinary to Sweden in 1719, a position in which he triumphed by rescuing the Swedes (facing disaster following the death of Charles XII) from domination by Russia. During his absence, however, the rise of Robert Walpole resulted in Carteret's being sidelined through a transfer to the lord lieutenancy of Ireland. Carteret's opposition to Walpole was a leitmotif of his career.

Anthony Chamier (1725-80), financier and government official. Chamier had no political ambitions, however, and preferred London's literary society: Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds were frequent visitors to his house in Epsom. This mezzotint is taken from one of the three portraits which Reynolds painted of him (painted 1767, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston). This impression formerly in the collection of Martin Erdmann, New York-based banker and collector, particularly of British eighteenth century mezzotints, in which area he acquired 'one of the most remarkable collections known, both for quantity and quality of impressions' (Lugt).

Sir Winston Churchill was a British prime minister and statesman who led the country to victory against Nazi Germany and the Axis powers in World War Two. Churchill lost power in the 1945 post-war election but remained leader of the opposition, voicing apprehensions about the Cold War and encouraging European and trans-Atlantic unity. In 1951, he became prime minister again. He resigned in 1955, but remained an MP until shortly before his death. As well as his many political achievements, he left a legacy of an impressive number of publications and in 1953 won the Nobel Prize for Literature. After painter and draughtsman, Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley (1880 - 1952).

Half portrait of Alexandre Colonna-Walewski (1810-1868), right incline, right-gazing, seated and oval framed. Walewski was a politician and active diplomat for the Polish and French governing bodies. His poltical service sent him to places such as Buenos Aires and Florence. In 1855 he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and later become France's Minister of State in 1860. It was rumoured, with recent convincing evidence, that Walewski was the illegitimate son of Napoleon by his mistress Countess Marie Walewska.

Thomas Coningsby (1656-1729), MP for Leominster from 1679-1710 and 1715-16, when he was raised to the peerage. Coningsby holds a copy of the Magna Carta? On it is written "this is my birthright purchased with the blood of my ancestors". The painting by Kneller is now in the Tower of London. The appearence of the Tower of London in the background is a reference to his imprisonment there in 1720 for writing some ill-chosen words about Simon Harcourt, the Lord Chancellor.
Alexander: 382 who states that this was presumed a Private Plate.

Sir John Cotton, third baronet (1621-1702), MP for Huntingdon and later Huntingdonshire. He saw that the Cotton library was bought for the nation by act of parliament, possibly avoiding the possibility of it falling into the hands of his 'two illiterate grandsons' and being broken up. Watercolour after a portrait by Kneller, by George Perfect Harding (1779/80-1853), miniature painter. Harding devoted himself to producing minute copies in watercolour of works of historical and antiquarian interest. Examples of his work are in several major British institutions.

Joseph Cowen (1829-1900) holding a wind-up organ. He was an English politician and journalist. At Edinburgh University he interested himself in European revolutionary movements. He joined his father in his Blaydon brick business, smuggling documents abroad in the consignments of bricks, a trade which earned more than expected. In 1874 he was elected Member of Parliament and held the Newcastle-upon-Tyne seat as a Liberal. He was at that time a strong Radical on domestic matters, and a sympathizer with Irish Nationalism. He was highly respected by the nation and the House of Commons, and as an Imperialist and Colonial Federationist he supported Disraeli's foreign policy. He eventually retired and devoted his time to his newspaper, the Newcastle Daily Chronicle. See Ref: 17960

James Craggs the Younger (1686-1721). Part of his early life was spent abroad, where he made the acquaintance of George Louis, Elector of Hanover, afterwards King George I. In 1713 he became member of parliament for Tregony, in 1717 Secretary at War, and in the following year Secretary of State for the Southern Department. Craggs was implicated in the South Sea Bubble. Among Craggs's friends were Alexander Pope, who wrote the epitaph on his monument in Westminster Abbey, Joseph Addison, and John Gay.

Until 1640, Cromwell played only a small role in local administration and no significant role in national politics. However, it was the civil wars of the 1640s which lifted him from obscurity to power. Cromwell was one of the signatories of King Charles I's death warrant in 1649, and, as a member of the Rump Parliament, he dominated the short-lived Commonwealth of England. Eventually, in December 1653, he became head of state as Lord Protector, serving for almost five years, until his death on 3 September 1658.
