[Unidentified ship, previously thought to be the 'Coonatto']
TGD [artist's monogram T. G. Dutton] 506.
[London, William Foster, 15th July 1863.]
Tinted lithograph with hand colour, proof before letters. Image 405 x 595mm (16 x 23¼").
The Coonatto, a three-masted ship of 633 tons, built in London by Thomas Bilbé in 1863. Used as an Australian wool clipper, the name is an Aboriginal word for a food-bearing tree. In 1876 the Coonatto ran aground on rocks under the Seven Sisters in Sussex, where some of her iron remains can still be seen at low tide. Her captain, Captain Hillman, had his certificate suspended for three months for negligence, although there was speculation he wrecked the Coonatto for insurance money. However as his next ship, the 'Inch Kenneth' foundered the following year, killing Hillman, it would seem he was just inept.

On a forest path Imogen bares her breast and offers Pisanio a sword, begging him to kill her. After John Hoppner (1758-1810). John Boydell (1720-1804), publisher and Lord Mayor of London in 1790, began his Shakespeare Gallery to encourage British historical painting by commissioning paintings on the theme of Shakeapeare's plays from leading artists and reproducing them as high quality prints. When his gallery in Pall Mall opened in 1789 it contained 34 paintings; by the end it has nearly 170, by artists including Angelica Kauffman, Richard Westall, Thomas Stothard, George Romney, Henry Fuseli, Benjamin West, Robert Smirke, John Opie & Francesco Bartolozzi. 96 were engraved, published separately until the bound edition, ''A Collection of Prints, From Pictures Painted for the Purpose of Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakspeare, by the Artists of Great-Britain'' was issued in 1805. The project was over-ambitious, and the cost caused the firm to go bankrupt.

Portrait of General Sir Hew Whiteford (or Whitefoord) Dalrymple, Bt (1750 - 1830). He was a British Army general and Governor of Gibraltar. He joined the army in 1763 and quickly rose through the ranks until in 1767 to 1768 he took time out to study at Edinburgh University. In 1790 he became Colonel and served during the Flanders Campaign until in 1794 he was made Major-General on returning victorious to England. In 1796 he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. In 1801 he was promoted to Lieutenant-General and then from 1802 to 1806 he was General Officer Commanding Northern District, and was later made Governor of Gibraltar. In 1808 he was made Commander of the Portuguese Expedition and immediately halted Wellesley's pursuit of the beaten French to Lisbon. He then chose to sign a truce with the French General, Junot, allowing him to return to France in British ships. This, Convention of Cintra, was denounced both in London and in Portugal, and thus Dalrymple sailed home to face an enquiry and never held a field command again. After John Jackson (1778 - 1831).

[Ziethen sitzend vor seinem König.]
[Daniel Chodowiecki.]
[n.d., c.1786].
Rare engraving, proof before letters. Platemark: 460 x 560mm (18 x 22"). Small taped tears. Stain top right corner.
One of a pair of scenes from the life of Fredrick the Great. During an audience with his generals Frederick ordered a chair to be brought for the 85-year-old Hans Joachim von Zieten, telling him to sit; when von Zieten refuses to sit in the presence of his monarch, Frederick forces him by threatening to leave. The companion scene has Frederick asleep at a table, surrounded by his generals: von Zieten tells his companions to let the King sleep and watch over him, as the king has watched over them for long enough.

[From the Temple to Waterloo.]
H.Gallon. [Pencil signature.]
London, Published Dec 28th 1887 by Louis Brall & Son, 38 Hart Street, Bloomsbury, W.C. [Pencil.]
Etching. Signed proof, edition limited to 225. 330 x 750mm. Printseller's Association blindstamp lower left. Framed.
Robert Gallon [1845 - 1925] was a landscape painter who lived in London. He travelled extensively throughout the British Isles to paint his subjects. His etchings appear loose but actually have defined detail. The silhouetted buildings along the Temple Embankment and busy barges making their way along the Thames are a very good contrast to the companion etching 'Tidal Thames' where the wintery sky and snow covered banks show the Thames as a busy river highway. Gallon actively exhibited during the years 1868 - 1903 at the principal London Galleries, particularly the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

His Late Most Excellent Majestry King George the Third.
His Late Most Excellent Majestry King George the Third. I hope the time will come when every poor child in my dominions will be able to read the Bible.
From an Original Drawing taken at the Age of 82 in the 60th Year of his Reign.
Published 1 March 1820, for the Proprietor and Sold by Mess.rs Cribb & Son Holborn and R. Cooper No. 1 Edward Street, Hampstead Road.
Etching, proof impression; sheet 425 x 275mm (16¾ x 10¾").
Unusual portrait of George III (1738-1820) in old age. The king's last public appearance was in 1810, a decade before his death, and was followed by a manic episode. His eyesight deteriorated until he was completely blind, and he was increasingly afflicted by deafness. Treatment was left in the hands of mad-doctors, with conventional physicians largely denied access to the king. A regency was declared in 1811, which saw the future George IV act as regent until his father's death. Of all the many portraits of George III published after his death, this is one of very few to depict the darkness of the king's final years.
