Chryses, Priest of Apollo, invoking his God to revenge the Injuries done him by Agamemnon.
Chryses, Priest of Apollo, invoking his God to revenge the Injuries done him by Agamemnon. Hom. Il.d
Painted by B. West / Engrav'd by J.R. Smith
Publish'd March 1st 1774, by W.m Humphrey, Gerrard Street, Soho, London.
Scarce mezzotint, platemark 510 x 355mm (20 x 14"). Some creasing off image; repaired breaks along platemark.
During the Trojan War, Agamemnon abducted Chryses' daughter Chryseis and refused Chryses' attempts to ransom her (the gifts which Agamemon rejected lay on the floor). As shown here, Chryses then prayed to Apollo (seen here riding through the sky in his chariot) for revenge, which came in the form of a plague which befell Agamemnon's army. He was forced to return Chryseis in order to end it. The reunion of Chryses with his daughter was perhaps a common theme for artists of this period than the anguished invocation depicted here. Mezzotint by J.R. Smith published in 1774, the year after Benjamin West's painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy. The print was later republished by John Boydell.
D'Oench 36 i/ii; Frankau 81. For Chryses reunited with his daughter, see refs. 18276 and 21858. Ex: The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

Mr William Armstrong's Design for a Chain Bridge across the River Avon, from St Vincent's Rocks to Leigh Down.
Mr William Armstrong's Design for a Chain Bridge across the River Avon, from St Vincent's Rocks to Leigh Down.
Published by J. Rees, Bookseller, 53 Wine Street, Bristol, from a Drawing by Mr W. West, May, 1830.
Rare lthograph. Sheet 265 x 380mm (10½ x 15"). Glue stains in corners.
A view of Clifton Gorge with a bridge designed by William Armstrong for the second of two design competitions, eventually won by 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is not a suspension bridge, rather a cast iron span supported by brick towers. Armstrong was the engineer-in-charge of Marc Brunel's Thames Tunnel. It is likely that the artist was William West, (1801-61), creator of the Clifton Observatory.

Fine hand-coloured etching. Sheet: 385 x 290mm (15¼ x 11½"). Trimmed within plate. Taped tear top left in sky.
Lady Archer and Lady Buckinghamshire in the pillory, Lady Buckinghamshire standing on her Faro bank box with her breasts bare. Lord Kenyon stands beneath, ringing a bell and declaiming against illegal gambling. Aristocratic women were unable to gamble in public houses so often set up their own private tables, however, following the start of the French Revolution any behaviour by the aristocratic classes which might cause the working and middle to react was stongly clamped down on. Chief Justaice Lord Kenyon, while judging a case about gambling debts, suggested the pillory as punishment for gamblers, 'whatever may be their rank. or station in the country'. The ladies here ran a notorious faro-bank.

Coloured aquatint. 220 x 280mm. Faint offset from text.
The original Hammersmith bridge opened in 1827, and was designed by William Tierney Clark. Hammersmith Bridge was the first suspension bridge over the River Thames. There were concerns about the strength of the bridge as early as the 1850s. Crowds loved to watch the boat race from this particular vantage point, halfway through the course: when crowds on the bridge hit around the 11,000 mark in the late 1860s, the bridge swayed from side to side as people flocked to the sides to see the race.

Published 1828, by R.:Ackermanm, 96 Strand, London.
Hand coloured aquatint, 285 x 345mm. 11¼ x 13½". Old mount residue.
Hampton House on the Thames at Hampton, Middlesex, formerly the residence of David Garrick. Capability Brown advised on the layout of the gardens. After Garrick died in 1779, his wife Eva continued to live in the villa until her death at the age of 98 in 1822. She had difficulty in keeping the house in repair. After Mrs Garrick died in 1823 a sale of pictures and some of the furniture took place. Many of Garrick's books also went to the British Museum to form an important part of the British Library's collection of early plays. Mrs Garrick's solicitor, Thomas Carr, bought the estate and tried to keep everything as it had been in Garrick's time. He and his wife showed visitors round and even installed a replica statue in the Temple in the grounds (to left). From 'Picturesque tour of the River Thames illustrated by twenty-four coloured views, a map and vignettes, from original drawings ... by William Westall and Samuel Owen'.

Etching. Plate: 260 x 190mm (10¼ x 7½"). Uncut sheet; signed by artist in pencil. Creasing on Chine paper.
Etching by history painter Charles West Cope (1811-90), widely regarded as the finest of his prints. Cope is primarily remembered for his frescoes in the House of Lords and the peers' corridor, but in addition to his academic renderings of historical and literary subjects, he was a talented printmaker. He was a founder member of the Etching Club (whose members also included Samuel Palmer). This late etching of a woman caring for a baby (made soon before Cope left London to retire to the country) was originally one of a pair with 'Hope Deferred'.
