Despite being blinded in a navy accident aged 19, Fielding set up his own business and, in his spare time, studied law. He worked very closely with his half-brother Henry Fielding (a chief magistrate as well as a novelist), creating the first professional police force, the Bow Street Runners. Known as the "Blind Beak", he could allegedly recognise three thousand criminals by the sounds of their voices.

'Garrick's Cup' was presented to David Garrick by the Mayor and Corporation of Stratford during Garrick's 'Shakespeare Jubilee' in 1769. According to the letterpress it was carved from the wood of a Mulberry tree that Shakespeare planted in 1609 and felled by the Reverend Francis Gastrell to stop sightseers. It was sold by Christies in 1825 (after the death of Garrick's widow), and offered for sale by J. Johnston in Covent Garden for 200 guineas. There are several Garrick's Cups in existence. From Charles John Smith's 'Historical and Literary Curiosities' (scarce).

Her husband Sir Patrick Hume, 2nd Baronet, was a Scottish statesman and was a supsected conspirator in the Rye House Plot. So the family fled to the Netherlands. They returned to Scotland after the Glorious Revolution in 1688. He once again joined the Scottish parliament as the commissioner for Berwickshire until becoming Lord Polwarth in 1690. Then he was made Lord Chancellor in 1696 and Earl of Marchmont in 1697, although when Anne came to the throne in 1702 he lost his chancellorship. They are the parents of songwriter and accountant Lady Grizel Baillie famous for her song "Werna my Heart Licht I Wad Dee" (Were not My Heart Light I would Die).
