Plate 5 from Joseph Farington's (1747 - 1821) 'History of the River Thames', 1794, a two-volume publication including 76 aquatints. A view from Richmond Hill, south west London, with the Thames in the middle distance where boats sail, with Richmond Bridge in the centre. Ham House can be seen on the left bank, with a couple standing in a sloping field in the right foreground. Ham House was built in 1610 by Sir Thomas Vavasour, Knight Marshal to James I. It originally comprised an H-plan layout consisting of nine bays and three storeys. The Thames-side location was ideal for Vavasour, allowing him to move between the courts at Richmond, London and Windsor.

The view from Richmond Hill from the top of Nightingale Lane, with the wall of the grounds of The Wick (still extant, although here without the conservatory). First published by the artist, Joseph Samuel Alpenny (originally Halfpenny, 1787-1858), a Dublin-born artist and printmaker who settled in Richmond c.1823.

Being A Collection Of Plans, Elevations, and Perspective Views, Of` The Royal Palaces, Noblemen, and Gentlemens Seats, In Great Britain, Not Exhibited in any Collection of this nature hitherto published. A view along the River Thames with Syon House, home of the Percys, Dukes of Northumberland, since 1594, to the right; several figures on the river bank, including a couple on horseback with a dog. Syon House here shows Inigo Jones' improvements but not those which Robert Adam was to make from 1762 onwards. From "A Collection of One Hundred Views In England and Wales". John Boydell's 'Collection of Views' was made after he turned from engraver to print publisher in 1767. The first collection was issued in 1770, and included some plates by printmakers other than himself.
