In 1821, he gained the nickname 'Jog Along Jack', after being asked what was an adequate income for an English gentleman, and replying, 'that a man might jog along comfortably enough on £40,000 a year', an equivalent of nearly two millions pounds at modern values. He was MP for County Durham for 16 years from 1813, and was appointed Lord Privy Seal in 1830 when his father-in-law, Lord Grey, became prime minister. Between 1835 and 1837 he served as Ambassador to Russia. The following year, Lambton became Governor-General of Canada, where he was known as 'Radical Jack', and subsequently lauded in English -Canadian history for his recommendation to introduce responsible government and recommending the union of Upper and Lower Canada. Places named after him in Canada, New Zealand etc.

William Lynch Esq.r
William Lynch Esq.r
Engraved by S. W. Reynolds from a Picture painted by Gainsborough.
Mezzotint. 350 x 255mm (13¾ x 10"). Trimmed within plate on lower edge.
William Lynch (1726—1797), steward of Ipswich Races. He attended St. Johns, Cambridge and by the 1750s he was a Captain in the Suffolk Militia under Colonel Francis Vernon, nephew of the famous Admiral Vernon. Both he and Vernon fell out with Philip Thicknesse, the Lieutenant Governor of Landguard Fort, where the regiment of the Suffolk militia was stationed. On one occasion Lynch slipped off to Ipswich for a few days rest and recreation: incensed, Thicknesse demanded his return, which he cheerfully ignored. Thicknesse had Lynch thrown in jail for twenty-four hours to reflect on his lack of discipline and threatened to report him to the Secretary of War. The Suffolk Militia was disbanded in 1762; however in 1794 Lynch signed up as Captain for an Ipswich Regiment of Volunteers formed to meet the threat of French invasion, aged 68. Gainsborough painted this portrait (now in the Muskegon Museum of Art in Michigan) as one of a series of young officers c.1756. However, a decade later, Lynch had Gainsborough rework the portrait to excise the military theme, removing his hat and covering up much of his coa

She plays the organ seated on a low stool, two angelic children singing behind; from upper left, cloud with shafts of light. Miss Linley of Bath married the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan after eloping with him, in 1773. She was famous for her soprano voice, so the pose was obviously suitable. Sheridan, having ordered the picture, found he could not afford to pay for it. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1775.
