Portrait of Major John Bernardi (1657-1736), English soldier and Jacobite who spent 40 years in Newgate Prison, without proper trial, for his involvement in an assassination plot against William III, dying there aged nearly eighty. This portrait comes from his autobiography, 'A Short History of the Life of Major Bernardi by Himself', in which he describes marrying in Newgate in 1712 (aged 68) and fathering ten children while imprisoned.

A large group of cattle at Barnet Fair. Barnet Fair was founded in 1588 when Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to the Lord of the manor of Barnet to hold a fair twice yearly. In 1834, 'The Times' newspaper reported that Barnet Fair was England's largest cattle market, with up to 40,000 animals on display. Portrait, in oval of Oliver Cromwell (1599 - 1658), one of the commanders of the New Model Army which defeated the royalists in the English Civil War. Until 1640, Cromwell played only a small role in local administration and no significant role in national politics. However, it was the civil wars of the 1640s which lifted him from obscurity to power. Cromwell was one of the signatories of King Charles I's death warrant in 1649, and, as a member of the Rump Parliament, he dominated the short-lived Commonwealth of England. Eventually, in December 1653, he became head of state as Lord Protector, serving for almost five years, until his death on 3 September 1658.

Arabs or Berbers drinking tea and smoking long pipes with opium, on board a Royal Navy warship; cannon to right. HMS Swiftsure, a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy was lauched in 1787. After fighting at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 she was captured by the French off the coast of Libya in 1801 (one of only five Royal Navy ships to be captured in all the Napoleonic Wars), subsequently fighting for the French at the Battle of Trafalgar, in which she was recaptured, returning to Royal Navy service. After Cooper Willyams (1762 - 1816), for his 'A Voyage up the Mediterranean in His Majesty’s Ship the Swiftsure, one of the squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson, K.B. ... with a description of the battle of the Nile on the first of August 1798' (1802). Colonel Robert Lilburne (1613-65), a signatory to the death warrant of King Charles I in 1649 and forty-seventh of the fifty nine Commissioners. After the restoration he was found guilty of high treason: his sentence of being hung, drawn and quartered was commuted to life in prison. His younger brother was John Lilburne, the well known Leveller. According to Alexander this print was published to meet the demand from extra-illustrators, particularly those who wanted to enlarge Clarendon's 'History of the Great Rebellion'.

Egyptians and two Europeans, one in a naval officer's uniform, smoking pipes and assembled in an interior. Murad Bey (c.1750 - 1801) was an Egyptian Mamluk chieftain (Bey), joint ruler of Egypt with Ibrahim Bey. Following his defeat at the hands of Napoleon's armies at the Battle of the Pyramids, Murad fled to Upper Egypt, mounting a brief guerrilla campaign against the French. One of the twelve pen lithographs from 'Specimens of Polyauthography', the first set of artist's lithographs ever published (by Philipp André in 1803). The new medium allowed artists to draw directly onto a prepared stone, allowing artists to make prints which arguably resembled drawings more than any earlier printmaking technique. Unlike many printmaking techniques, lithography required no special training as artists could work directly onto the plate and leave specialist printers to actually make the prints. For this reason many artists who were not trained printmakers (such as Géricault and Delacroix) often worked in lithography. Cooper (1740-1814) had studied in Paris with the famous engraver J.-P. Le Bas and earned the nickname 'the English Poussin' for his depictions of Rome and its surroundings. After succeeding Alexander Cozens as drawing master at Eton in 1768, in later life he became drawing master to Princess Charlotte (1796-1814).

Early lithograph by Richard Cooper (1740-1814). The son of another engraver, Cooper worked for a time in Italy, where he befriended Alexander Runciman and developed a style of landscape painting similar to that of Runciman (he became known as the 'English Poussin'). After marrying in Edinburgh in 1777, Cooper settled in London around 1787, where he dedicated himself to drawing (he became drawing master at Eton) and occasionally printmaking. This lithograph was included in the 1807 edition of the first portfolio of artists' lithographs, 'Specimens of Polyauthography'. The new medium allowed artists to draw directly onto a prepared stone, allowing artists to make prints which arguably resembled drawings more than any earlier printmaking technique. Head and shoulders portrait of Prince Rupert (1619-1682) inclined to the right, in an oval frame. He turned his efforts to science later in life and is credited with many military based discoveries. He was the third founding member of the Royal Society in 1660 and one of the first mezzotinters.

Willyams served as chaplain of the Swiftsure. He was present at the Battle of the Nile and according to DNB his is 'the first, the most particular, and the most authentic account of the battle'.
