Gentlemen in top hats converse and survey the cows and horses under awnings. In the center are marquees and farm equipment such as ploughs and carts. The Royal Agricultural Society of England was established in the United Kingdom in 1838. Its motto was "Practice with Science", and its aim was to promote the scientific development of agriculture. The society received its Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1840.

Pair of lithographs with fine hand colour. Printed areas 535 x 380mm (21 x 15"), with very large margins. Some spotting to margins.
A pair of equestrian portraits, with women riding side-saddle, accompanied by a hound. Plate 1 has the woman in medieval dress, plate 2 in contemporary riding outfit. Alfred de Dreux (1810-60) painted portraits of both people and horses, often together. In 1848 he followed King Louis-Philippe into exile in Surrey, but returned to France in 1852, taking commissions from Napoleon III. He died on a visit to England.

A broad tree trunk with one single curling branch in a field in Binfield, Berkshire, with scattered trees and a shepherd leaning on his staff to left, his sheep grazing nearby. A tribute to Alexander Pope has been carved into the tree by George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton of Frankley (1709 - 1773). Lyttelton was secretary to Frederick Prince of Wales, and author of many poetical and historical works.

Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) was a Scottish physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, writer and university principal. In 1855 he issued 'Memoirs of the Life, Writings and Discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton', which embodied the results of more than twenty years' investigation of original manuscripts and other available sources.

George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron [1788 - 1824], poet. Taken from a sketch from life by the Comte D'Orsay of Byron while he was in Genoa in 1822-3. During this period Byron wrote cantos 10-16 of Don Juan along with other works, before setting sail for Greece where he died while involved in the Greek war of Independence. By Alfred Guillaume D'Orsay, styled Count D'Orsay (1801-52), artist and dandy. D'Orsay and his lover Marguerite Gardiner, countess of Blessington were at the centre of fashionable London life and gathered around them many of the social and literary celebrities of their time. This portrait comes from a series of 125 of his profile sketches which include most of the celebrities of the day. Many of the related pencil sketches are in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

A view of St. John's from the river Cam. Alfred J Bennett (1861 - 1923) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolour and etching. He worked as a jeweller whilst also regularly submitting paintings to the Royal Academy of which four were exhibited between 1861-1880. After this success, Bennett left the jewellery trade to concentrate on his art. Bennett exhibited extensively, regularly contributing work to the Royal Watercolour Society and British Institution exhibitions, the RA, Walker's Gallery in New Bond Street, Fine Art Society, New English Art Club, Grosvenor Gallery, International Society, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

The Royal Military College at Sandhurst, Surrey, during the visit of William IV and Queen Adelaide. William de la Motte (1775-1863) won the favour of George III, who helped him gain a place at the Royal Academy under Benjamin West. In 1803 he was appointed drawing master at the R.M.C.

Influenced by Girtin's watercolour style, Delamotte was one of a group of landscape artists also including Constable and Turner, who took to making oil sketches in the open.

The Royal Military College began in 1800 as a school for staff officers which later became the Staff College, Camberley. A Junior Department was formed in 1802, to train gentlemen cadets as officers of the Line. A new college was built at Sandhurst, into which the cadets moved in 1812. After 1860, the RMC succeeded the East India Company's Military Seminary as the establishment where most officers of the Indian Army were trained. Following the abolition of the purchase system in 1870, attendance at Sandhurst became to usual route to a commission. The College was enlarged in 1912, when New College was built.

Two sets of topographical etchings in the vicinity of Sandhurst, Berkshire (of twenty and ten plates respectively) by William Delamotte (1775-1863), landscape artist. From 1812 Delamotte was a drawing master at the Royal Military College in Sandhurst. He was still teaching there in 1834, when this volume was presented to a cadet for his achievements in landscape drawing, so it is likely that Delamotte was personally involved with the production and presentation of the volume. Influenced by Girtin's watercolour style, Delamotte was one of a group of landscape artists also including Constable and Turner, who took to making oil sketches in the open. Reverend Josiah Pullen, Vice-President of Magdalen Hall from 1656 until his death in 1714, planted this elm c.1680 on a hill with an uninterrupted view of Oxford. He would walk there and back twice daily in half an hour from Magdalen Hall, sometimes accompanied by Richard Steele, the essayist, on a raised footpath that is now Pullen's Lane. The stump of the elm was destroyed by fire in 1909.

A collection of topographical sketches of English and European scenery by William Delamotte (1775-1863), published as a prize for the Royal Military College in Sandhurst, where Delamotte was drawing master. Influenced by Girtin's watercolour style, Delamotte was one of a group of landscape artists also including Constable and Turner, who took to making oil sketches in the open. The text gilt-embossed on the cover reads 'Royal Military College. Presented for Attention to, and Progress in, Landscape Drawing'; the College presentation label reads 'Presented to Gentleman Cadet [Alexander B. Rooke] for Attention to, and Progress in, [Landscape Drawing November, 1836.]'. Rooke (b.1822) became an ensign (without purchase) in the 77th Foot the following year.

A monkey wearing a cap and a coat with fur collar and cuff, smoking a pipe at a window. "Fashion is but One Creature Apeing Another" Crowquill affirmed in this hilarious send-up of the 19th century British gentleman caricature. Patented in 1842, a glyphograph is a relief printing block, created by drawing through a compostion on a metal plate, and making an electrotype of the result.

Herne the Hunter's Oak was located in Home Park, Windsor. Herne, a character from Shakespeare's 'The Merry Wives of Windsor', seen seated below the tree with antlers on his head, was a forest keeper, said to have hung himself from the tree, his ghost haunted the forest at midnight.

Walter Savage Landor (1775-1864), author of 'Imaginary Conversations' and 'Pericles and Aspasia'. "Moet and Chandon for Me", sequel to the famous "Champagne Charlie", also written by Leybourne . This was an early celebrity endorsement: he was paid by Moet to compose the songs and would appear on stage waving a bottle of vintage Moet & Chandon. A rival, Alfred Vance, had the same arrangement with Cliquot. Alfred Concanen (1835-1886) was one of the leading lithographers of the Victorian period, best remembered for his illustrated sheet music covers.

A rural view of a path in a mountainous landscape. Numerous horses can be seen on the path, above which is a wooden beam connected to a water mill on the Thames. William Alfred Delamotte (1775 - 1863), was an English painter and engraver, who studied at the Royal Academy, becoming a student of Benjamin West.

Lithograph on india with back-sheet printed with title; extremely rare. Sheet 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾"). Some spotting, corner creased.
Half-length portrait of William Henry Phillips, whose 'Patent portable fire annihilator, for extinguishing fire by gases and vapour, affording a means of saving life and property when water may be unavailing' was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, winning a prize. This was a device that used a chemical reaction to produce a cloud of carbon dioxide to smother a fire. A motion was presented to Parliament that every government vessel should have an Annihilator. However the Fire Annihilator Works, at Battersea Fields, burned to the ground in 1852, and the business failed. P.T. Barnum invested in the company that bought the American patent, but after some unsatisfactory trials, that company also closed, although the Great American Showman still believed the invention was a valuable one, writing about it in his autobiography.
