Brunswick Dock, Blackwall, named after the ducal house in honour of George III, with text describing its history. The dock was the first wet dock with gates on to the Thames, and its main feature was a large tower containing a crane for raising or fitting masts to tall ships, visible here. One of six large aquatints by William Daniell of the new docks then being excavated to reduce congestion in the Pool of London. Daniell (1769-1837) was one of the few artists of the period who was as skilled as an aquatinter as he was a painter. It was common practice to add engraved or etched lines to give shape to the tonal effect of the aquatint; this plate is pure aquatint, with no added lines, not even on the rigging of the boats. The margins have been given a grey wash in imitation of watercolour presentation of the period. A painting of the same scene by Daniell, which may have been executed in preparation for this engraving, is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (BHC1867).

The London Hospital was founded in 1740 and first situated in Moorfields, before moving in the 1750s to buildings in Whitechapel designed by hospital surveyor Boulton Mainwaring as shown here. The new building, finished in 1757, was the finest hospital building in London at the time. This is one of few engravings of the hospital.

In August 1812 the keys of the old Mint were finally delivered to the Constable of the Tower. The main building, designed by James Johnson and completed by Robert Smirke, was flanked by two gatehouses, while behind it, and separated from it by an open quadrangle, were the buildings housing the machinery.

In 1827 a group of philanthropists founded the Destitute Sailors' Asylum. This is a very rare view inside the converted warehouse in Dock Street they used, north of the London Docks in London's East End. At first, the Asylum provided shelter and food for shipwrecked and destitute seamen, but it soon became clear that many other seamen needed help. A committee was set up and funds were raised to build a Sailors' Home in nearby Well Street. This opened in 1835.

These cloisters had already been demolished by 1755, but the Royal Foundation of St Katharine continued to operate in the same location until 1825, when the remaining buildings were demolished to make room for St Katharine's Docks (which took its name from the church).

The 'Elizabeth' entering the St Katharine Docks on the opening day. The complex was made-up of two connected basins, the east dock and the west dock. Two steam engines designed by James Watt pumped water to maintain the water level in the docks. The docks had over a million square feet of storage area to house items such as tea, rubber, wool, marble, ivory, tallow and turtle shell. Despite this, the docks were never a great financial success and were finally closed in 1968, having long run at a loss. They were sold by the Port of London Authority to the Greater London Council.

Thomas Telford's only major project in London was the development of St Katherine Dock, just east of the Tower of London. Clearing the 23 acre caused 1250 houses to be demolished (as well as with the medieval hospital of St. Katharine), displacing 11,300 inhabitants, mostly port workers.

A bird's-eye view of John Rennie's plan for St Katherine's Docks, published the year the plan was approved by Act of Parliament and two years before construction started. Over 1250 houses were demolished, including the medieval hospital of St. Katharine, with over 11,300 residents evicted. The excavated earth was transported to Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Chelsea to provide topsoil for the new developments. The resulting docks were too small to be commerically successful

A view across a busy River Thames, with various steam barges and rowing vessels, towards the Tower of London. William L. Wyllie (1851-1931) was born on July 5th 1851, in London. He attended Heatherley’s art school until the age of fifteen, leaving to study at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Medal at the age of eighteen. In the early 1870’s Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. He also served in the Royal Navy during WWI, painting seascapes and coastal landscapes. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory. Wyllie died on the 6th April 1931 in Hampstead, and scouts from the 1st Portchester Sea Scout Troop, which he had founded, rowed his coffin across Portsmouth Harbour for his burial at Portchester Castle.

A view of the Tower of London, with barges in the foreground on the River Thames. By Rowland Langmaid (1897-1956), the marine painter and etcher who studied under William Lionel Wylie. He joined the Royal Navy in 1910 went to sea at the beginning of the First World War, during which he made a series of sketches for landings. After the war he studied at the Royal Academy School and the Royal College of Art, and later returned to the Active List in 1939 in the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served as official Admiralty artist to the Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean Fleet from 1941 to 1943.
