The illustrated titlepage of 'Sketches in Afghaunistan' by James Atkinson (1780-1852), 'Superintending Surgeon of the Army of the Indus, Bengal Division' during the ill-fated British expedition into Afghanistan (1838-42). A Persian scholar and linguist, Atkinson has been described as 'a Renaissance man among Anglo-Indians'. Because of his languages he met many of the Afghan protagonists, including both Shah Shoojah-ool-Moolk and Dost Mohammad Khan. Fortunately he left the British garrison in 1840 to take another post, thus avoiding the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842. In his book 'The Expedition into Afghanistan', also published 1842, he compared the British presence in Afghanistan to Sisyphus rolling his stone up the hill.

Very rare aquatint. Sheet 500 x 615mm (19¾ x 24¼"). Trimmed within plate on three sides, repaired tear top left, a few signs of surface wear.
A picturesque view of the Causey Arch, a single-arched bridge built for a horse-drawn railway for transporting coal from Tanfield Coal works to the River Tyne. Built 1725-6 by stonemason Ralph Wood, it was the longest single-span bridge in the country with an arch span of 31 metres (102 ft), a record it held until 1756. Over 900 horse-drawn wagons crossed each day. In the 19th century, the wooden track was replaced with metal rails, and horses were replaced by stationary steam winding engines. The line closed in 1962 but the arch was restored in the 1980s for public use. Engraved by J.C. Stadler after a watercolour by the Newcastle artist Joseph Atkinson.

H.R.H.Frederick Augustus Duke of York & Albany [1763-1827] was appointed colonel of the 2nd Horse Grenadier Guards (now 2nd Life Guards) in 1782, and promoted major-general and appointed colonel of the Coldstream Guards in 1784. He was created Duke of York and Albany and Earl of Ulster on 29 November 1784 and became a member of the Privy Council.Famed as the 'The Grand Old Duke of York' Frederick was the second son of George III. He was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, between 1798 and 1809. Unsuccessful in the field during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, he is better remembered for putting down corruption in the administration of the army. In 1809, he was dismissed from office after revelations that his mistress Mary Anne Clarke had been selling army commissions. This portrait shows his stolling on the Horse Guards Parade.

A view looking past a group of camping Afghans to the fortress of Dost Mohammad Khan (1793-1863). It was his negotiations for help from the Russians that led the British to invade Afghanistan in 1839. Forced into exile by the British, he returned in triumph in 1842. During the British invasion the Battle of Ghazni (July 23rd 1839) was a significant victory: the loss of the city caused the Afghan ruler, Dost Muhammad, to ask for terms of surrender, but finding them unacceptable, he fled Kabul. From 'Sketches in Afghanistan' by James Atkinson (1780-1852), 'Superintending Surgeon of the Army of the Indus, Bengal Division' during the ill-fated British expedition into Afghanistan (1838-42). A Persian scholar and linguist, Atkinson has been described as 'a Renaissance man among Anglo-Indians'. Because of his languages he met many of the Afghan protagonists, including both Shah Shoojah-ool-Moolk and Dost Mohammad Khan. Fortunately he left the British garrison in 1840 to take another post, thus avoiding the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842. In his book 'The Expedition into Afghanistan', also published 1842, he compared the British presence in Afghanistan to Sisyphus rolling his stone up the hill.

Nagasaki was then the only port open to westerners, mainly Dutch traders. Kruzenshtern was a German who commanded the first Rusian circumnavigation of the world. Print made to commemorate the famous capture of two French standards (those of the 45eme and 105eme de la ligne) during the Seventh Coalition's victory in the Battle of Waterloo. It is not known who captured the eagle of the 45eme (the text here only noting it was taken by Scotch Greys), but Corporal F. Stiles was credited with the capture of the 105eme eagle, as recorded here. Stiles was the only officer rewarded for the capture by being made a sergeant and later given and ensigncy, although competing accounts credit another officer, Captain Alexander Clark, with the capture. The eagle standard of the 105eme is now in the collection of the National Army Museum, London. By John Augustus Atkinson (1775 - 1830), painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Battle scene depicting the moment Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Angelsea was wounded in the leg by artillery fire. Paget's, horse rears up and two cavalrymen near by look concerned. Meanwhile, the battle rages on with clouds of smoke billowing above the ranks of soldiers. On losing his leg Paget is reported to have cried 'By God, sir, I've lost my leg!,' to which Wellington replied, 'By God, sir, so you Have!'. Following the amputation of the wounded leg, it went on to have career as a tourist attraction in the village of Waterloo.
