A scene of a battle between the Venetian and Ottoman fleets taking place in the Aegean Sea on 21 July 1718, during the Seventh Ottoman-Venetian War. Fought between 1714 and 1718, it was the last conflict between the two powers, and ended with an Ottoman victory and the loss of Venice's major possession in the Peloponnese (Morea).

Famous American Revolution satire, in which a figure of Time uses a magic lantern to project an allegorical representation of revolution in America, showing the consequences of the Stamp Act and the tax on tea, watched by an audience personifying the four continents. In the title area, two medallions depicting Holland and Switzerland as precursors of the American struggle in their own experiences of oppression. One (left) is inscribed "Auto da fe" and "Holland. 1560". It represents a man tied to the stake, while a monk, holding up a crucifix, holds a torch to the pile. On the right. is "Wilhelm Tell, Switzerland. 1296". Legendary Swiss patriot William Tell aims with a cross-bow at the apple on his son's head, while Austrian bailiff Gessler on horseback points at the child. Between the medallions is part of an oak-tree. The medallion representing Holland is supported (left) by the Dutch lion holding in his paw a sheaf of seven arrows representing the United Provinces. Hercules with his club (right) supports the medallion of Switzerland. An adaptation, in reverse, of 'The Oracle' by John Dixon. Engraved and published in Nuremberg by Carl Gottlieb Guttenberg (1743 - 1790).

A satire comparing 'Pagan Laws' & 'Hindoo Morals' with British 'Civilization', published around the time Queen Victoria assumed the title of 'Empress of India'. The Governor-General of India (probably Robert Bulwer-Lytton, in office 1876-80) sits in a Car of Juggernaut topped with the Lion & Unicorn, and decorated with the ills of British society, including 'Outrage & Robbery', 'Drunkenness', 'Plunder', 'Wife Kicking' and 'Murder & Mutilation - Wainwright' (a reference to Henry Wainwright who was hanged for murdering and dismembering his mistress in 1875). The studded wheels are marked 'Taxes'. On either side is an Indian figure: one carries a sheet 'Touch Not Wine'; the other 'Love Your Wife & Family. Respect Old Age'. Underneath are four quadrains explaining the print.

A sledge party set up camp in a snow-covered, barren wasteland, from Walter William May's 'Series of Fourteen Sketches Made During the Voyage up Wellington Channel in Search of Sir John Franklin'. Sir Edward Belcher led five ships to the Arctic in the largest and last naval search for Sir John Franklin and the crews of the 'Erebus' and 'Terror', missing from an earlier expedition seeking the Northwest Passage. Four out of the five vessels were abandoned in pack ice, for which Belcher was court-martialled, but acquitted. Although they were unable to find Franklin they rescued the crew of HMS Investigator, which had become stuck during an earlier rescue expedition under the command of Robert McClure.

Francis Atterbury (1662-1732), Bishop of Rochester and Dean of Westminster 1713-21. A High Church Tory and Jacobite, he gained patronage under Queen Anne, but was imprisoned in the Tower in 1722 for communicating with the Old Pretender and banished for life the following year.

A portrait of Jacques Beaulieu (or Baulot, 1651-1719), an itinerant lithotomist, a surgeon specialising in the removal of calculi like kidney and gall stones. After a short career as a cavalry private, he had a six-year apprenticeship with another travelling surgeon. He travelled around with four assistants, who prepared his patients with cupping and blood-letting, before operating on all of them on the same day, usually leaving as soon as possible to avoid repercussions. From 1690 he donned the robes of a Dominican monk and started calling himself frère, without ordination. In 1697, in a session at the Hôtel Dieu in Paris, he performed a lithotomy in less than a minute and 10 more in less than an hour, with a 53.5% mortality rate while the average at the time was 14%, resulting in a five-year ban from practicing in Paris. He performed around 5,000 lithotomies before retiring in 1711. Based on a life-time portrait.

Francis Beaumont (1584-1616), English Renaissance dramatist and poet most famous for his collaborations with John Fletcher. He had a stroke while still in his twenties, after which he wrote no more plays. This portrait was originally one of four on one plate engraved by John Simon, along with Fletcher, John Milton and Abraham Cowley, for the series 'Poets and Philosophers of England'. For this second state the plate was cut down and a new title engraved.

A Victorian facsimiles of one the first detailed printed map of Birmingham, originally published the year that Samuel and Nathaniel Buck issued their prospect of the city. It names the streets and shows important buildings in perspective. The Corn Market next to St. Martin’s Church is now the Bull Ring. Underneath are statistics fot the city: in 1700 it contained 30 streets, 100 courts and alleys, 2,504 houses and 15032 inhabitants, but by 1730 there were 25 additional streets, 50 courts and alleys, 1252 houses and 8254 inhabitants, representing a doubling in size. William Westley, a local surveyor, owned land in the city's south-easst, commemorated with ‘Westley’s Row’.

Lancelot Blackburne (1658-1743), Arbishop of York from 1724 until his death, although he often neglected his spiritual duties. The Dictionary of National Biography describes his ''reputation for carnality'' and ''the laxity of his moral precepts''. His character was such that a rumour that in his youth he had been a buccaneer in the West Indies was widely believed, including by Horace Walpole, who knew him well.

Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) the Birmingham industrialist and entrepreneur, who was called 'the first manufacturer in England' by Josiah Wedgwood. He was the founder of the Soho Works in Birmingham in 1762, known for its high quality ornamental objects. In 1775 Boulton entered into partnership with the Scottish engineer James Watt who invented the steam engine; he supplied machinery for the new Mint on Tower Hill in 1805. Boulton also designed for the commercial art market, devising ormolu (gilt brass) mounts for the English potter Josiah Wedgwood's decorative wares. Both men belonged to the Lunar Society, a group of prominent Midlands men who developed ideas and techniques in science, manufacturing and transport.

Three of a set of four plates illustrating a game of bridge, with a young couple, clergyman and retired army officer around the table. This issue was a printed black border around the image with vignettes of the cards in each player's hand and the titles in white. The painter and illustrator Lance Thackeray (d.1916) is best known for his comic sporting illustration art, especially billiards and golf, and his humorous postcards. He was also an author, of 'The Light Side of Egypt' and 'The People of Egypt'. Along with Cecil Aldin and other noted artists, he was one of the founders of The London Sketch Club, a graphic artists' club in Chelsea.

Guillaume Marie-Anne Brune (1764-1815), 1st Count Brune. A political journalist, he joined the National Guard on the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. In 1793 he was appointed brigadier general, serving under Napoleon in the Italian campaign of 1796. In 1798 he commanded the army that occupied Switzerland and established the Helvetis Republic. The following year, he successfully defended Amsterdam during the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland, when this portrait was painted. After Waterloo he was shot and killed by an angry Royalist mob in Avignon and his body thrown into the Rhone, although it was later recovered by his family and given a proper burial. The artist, Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837) was a pupil of John Raphael Smith. He moved to The Hague in 1794 and to Amsterdam in 1797, where this plate was published and where he spent the rest of his life.

Sir Francis Burdett (1770-1844), 5th Baronet, in the dress of the French Republican state messenger, as designed by David and regulated by a complementary law of the Constitution of the Year III (1794-5). He was a supporter of the Radicals and opponent of the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act. One of a set of twelve plates.
