Michel Adanson (1727-1806) was a French naturalist of Scottish descent. In 1748, funded by the director of the Compagnie des Indes, he left France on an exploring expedition to Senegal. He spent five years there, collecting and describing numerous animals and plants. In 1759 he was elected a member of the Academy of Science and in 1763 he published his 'Familles naturelles des plantes'.

Portrait of a young Princess Adelheid of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1835–1900), sitting on a rock, leaning her left hand on another and turned away from the viewer. After the pen and ink drawing by Queen Victoria (1819–1901) currently in the collection of the Royal Collection Trust. Princess Adelheid of Hohenlohe-Langenburg was the daughter of Queen Victoria's elder half-sister Princess Feodora of Leiningen. Princess Adelheid, known as Ada, visited England with her mother and siblings in September 1840.

Francesco Ageno was ambassador of Genoa at London from 1760 to 1781. The portrait frontispiece to the sitter's 'Prose e rime del Signor Francesco D'Ageno'; engraved by Bartolozzi from a sketch by Richard Cosway of Gainsborough's portrait in the collection of Grolamo Tonioli. Bartolozzi erased Cosway's name in the published state after Gainsborough remonstrated.

Ali Pasha of Yannina (1740-1822), the Ottoman Albanian ruler of the western part of Rumelia, in a rowing boat with six oarsmen and bodyguard, smoking a pipe. From Louis Dupré's ''Voyage à Athènes et à Constantinople''. Lord Byron visited the court of Ai in Ioannina in 1809 and had very mixed feelings about him and his court. Ali Pasha was notorious throughout the region for the cruelties inflicted on his subjects, from torture to rape and even murder. In 1820 the tensions with the Turkish Reforms grew and after two years of fighting the Ottoman forces took hold of Ioannina forcing Ali Pasha to surrender. He was asked to surrender for beheading, which he refused and continued to fight until he was eventually shot.

George Kastrioti (1405-68), an Albanian widely known as Skanderbeg (Lord Alexander). Having been appointed governor of the Sanjak of Dibra in Macedonia by the Ottoman Turks in 1440, he rebelled and rallied the Albanians against the Ottomans, holding them off for two decades, until he died. In 1463 he was appointed chief commander of the crusading forces of Pope Pius II, but the Pope died before the troops were gathered. Skanderbeg is remembered as Albania's most important hero.

George Castriot, Scanderbeg (1405-1468), was an Albanian national hero. The son of a prince of North Albania, he was educated in the Muslim faith and kept at the court of Sultan Murad II. The Sultan favoured him by giving him the title bey and an army to command. However when the Ottomans indicated they would attack Albania, Scanderbeg escaped to his homeland, forming a league of princes. By resisting the Ottomans, Scanderbeg receieved assistance from Venice, Naples and Hungary, and the pope.

A costume plate from John Cam Hobhouse's 'A Journey Through Albania, and other Provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople'. Hobhouse (1st Baron Broughton, 1786-1869), met Byron at Trinity College, Cambridge, and travelled with him through Italy, Greece and Turkey, a journey which resulted in this book. Hobhouse became Byron's executor after the poet's death in 1824. Despite being imprisoned in Newgate for writing a Radical pamphlet in 1819 Hobhouse became a successful Whig politician, serving in government as Secretary at War, Chief Secretary for Ireland, First Commissioner of Woods and Forests and President of the Board of Control. He became a Privy Councillor in 1832.

Plate from 'Recueil de cent estampes représentant différentes nations du Levant', a set of one hundred plates depicting the costume of the Levant, based on paintings in the collection of the Marquis Charles de Ferriol, ambassador from the court of Versailles to the Sublime Porte from 1699 to 1710. The work had a profound effect on how the European conception of Turkey. After Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671-1737), the Flemish-French painter, who Ferriol brought with him to Istanbul at the age of eighteen. Ferriol commissioned at least a hundred paintings from Vanmour, which served as the source for the engravings in the 'Recueil' and are now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Portraits of Albert VIII and his wife Isabella (a daughter of the Spanish King Philip II) as sovereign regents of the Spanish Netherlands, as depicted in the Triptych of St. Ildefonso, with St Albert of Louvain standing above Albert and St Clare (the duchess's patron) above Isabella. Although printed on one sheet of paper, the portraits were designed to be separated and placed either side of the triptuch's central image, that of St. Ildefonso of Toledo receiving a chasuble from the Virgin Mary.
The triptych is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna

Albert the Magnanimous (1397-1439) of the House of Hapsburg,, elected King of the Romans as Albert II (although never crowned Holy Roman Emperor), as well as Duke of Austria and king of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia. He is best known for the expulsion of the Jews from Vienna in 1420: on March 12th 1421, 92 men and 120 women who were still in Vienna were burned at the stake south of the city walls. Alexander I of Russia (1777-1825), known as Alexander the Blessed, Tzar from 1801, Ruler of Poland from 1815, as well as the first Russian Grand Duke of Finland and Lithuania. Probably from a drawing by Thomas Phillips made at the time of the visit of the Allied Sovereigns to England in June 1814 to celebrate the Peace of Paris. In 1817 Phillips (who also had the rare distinction of having painted Napoleon from life, in 1802) painted a large canvas (now in Petworth House, Sussex) commemorating the event, showing Alexander.

Alexander II (1818-81), Emperor of Russia. Known as 'Alexander the Liberator' for his emancipation of Russia's serfs in 1861, Alexander also carried out many other reforms. He oversaw the sale of Alaska to the United States, fought a brief war with Turkey in 1877-8, and incorporated Poland into Russia in response to the uprising of 1863. He was assassinated by revolutionaries in 1881.

Ali Pasha (1740-1822), the Lion of Yannina, a Muslim Albanian ruler who served as an Ottoman pasha of the western part of Rumelia, the Ottoman Empire's European territory. A cruel ruler, he set about creating an almost-independent Greek-speaking state, allying himself with Napoleon, the British and whoever would serve him best. He eventually irked Sultan Mahmud II enough to send an army to bring him back under Ottoman control. Accepting the offer of a pardon he retired to a monastery, but soldiers were sent to arrest him for execution. Aged 82 he died fighting, shot through the floor of his room then beheaded.
