In the War of American Independence, he commanded the 'Triumph', 74 guns, and fought at Rodney's two actions with de Guichen in 1780. After getting his flag in 1787, he went as commander-in-chief to the West Indies, 1790-93. On his return he became a Lord of the Admiralty until he retired in 1796.

Sir George Back (1796-1878), British naval officer and explorer of Arctic America. He twice accompanied John Franklin to Canada's Northwest Territories (1819-22 and 1825-7) and later conducted two expeditions of his own to the same region. The first of these expeditions, in 1833, was to search for another British explorer, John Ross, who had disappeared on an Arctic voyage in 1829. In 1836, promoted to Captain and given command of HMS Terror, he returned to explore the coastal region east from the mouth of the river. Having been caught in the ice and striking an iceberg he nursed the sinking 'Terror' across the Atlantic, having to beach the ship on the coast of Ireland. Ill-health forced him to retire from active service, but he advised the Admiralty during the search for Franklin, and was promoted to vice-admiral in 1863 and admiral in 1876.

In 1829, at the age of 55, Beaufort became the Hydrographer of the British Admiralty, remaining so for 26 years, charting the seas to make them safe for the increasing amount of British and foreign shipping. Charles William de la Poer Beresford, 1st Baron Beresford GCB GCVO (1846-1919), known as Lord Charles Beresford until 1916, was a British Admiral and Member of Parliament. He combined the two careers of the navy and a member of parliament, making a reputation as a hero in battle and champion of the navy in the House of Commons. He was a well-known and popular figure who courted publicity, widely known to the British public as "Charlie B". He was considered by many to be a personification of John Bull, indeed was normally accompanied by his trademark, a bulldog. His later career was marked by a longstanding dispute with Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Fisher, over reforms championed by Fisher introducing new technology and sweeping away traditional practices. Fisher, slightly senior to Beresford and more successful, became a barrier to Beresford's rise to the highest office in the navy. Beresford rose to occupy the most senior sea commands, the Mediterranean and Channel fleets, but failed in his ambition to become First Sea Lord.

George Cranfield Berkeley (1753 - 1818), admiral, entered the navy in 1766 on board the Mary yacht, under the flag of his cousin, Rear-admiral Keppel, then appointed to carry over to Denmark the unfortunate Caroline Matilda. Young Berkeley was for some time the queen's page, and was afterwards appointed to the Guernsey, 50 guns, bearing the broad pennant of Commodore Pallisser, then going out as governor of Newfoundland. Here he had the peculiar advantage of instruction from Mr. Gilbert, then master of the Guernsey, and afterwards of the Resolution with Captain Cook, and assisted him in the survey of the coast of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1812 he retired altogether from active, and indeed from public life; for twenty-seven years (1783 - 1810) he had represented Gloucestershire in parliament, and had been a persistent supporter of Pitt, and an uncompromising opponent of the Addington ministry. G. Kneller pinxit. J. Houbraken sculps. Amst. 1747
Impensis J & P Knapton Londini 1747.
Fine engraving, plate 350 x 215mm (13½ x 8½"), with margins. Glued to album sheet. One small crease.
Bust portrait of George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington (1663-1733), in an architectural oval with draped curtain beyond; a seascape with a seabattle in a cartouche below; a mythical sea creature in lower left. He wears a long wig and neckerchief. From the series Birch's heads. In the mid-eighteenth century, the British historian Thomas Birch (1705 – 1766) published a series of short biographies of famous figures from his nation’s past. Accompanying each of the 108 biographies was an engraved portrait of the subject, whose likeness was presented within an elaborate decorative setting. These ornamental frames were designed by Hubert-François Bourguignon (1699 – 1773)—commonly known as Gravelot—a Parisian artist then working in London. After finishing the drawing, Gravelot sent sheets to Amsterdam. There, the Dutch printmaker Jacob Houbraken (1698 – 1780) created the final image by combining Gravelot’s design with portraits. Byng was one of the young army officers who supported William III's accession; 1691, transferred to the navy; 1704, played an important part in the capture of Gibraltar, which resulted in a knighthood; August 1718, decisive victory against the Spanish off Cape Passaro, Sicily; 1721, he was raised to the peerage with the title Baron Byng of Southill; 1725, created Viscount Torrington; 1727, first lord of the Admiralty.

Admiral Sir Henry Ducie Chads, GCB (1788-1868) was an officer in the British Royal Navy who saw action from the Napoleonic Wars to the Crimean War. He entered the Royal Naval Academy at 12 years of age, and in 1803 embarked aboard the 74-gun ship of the line HMS Excellent, sharing in the defence of Gaeta and the capture of Capri. He later distinguished himself at the occupation of the Île de la Passe, gateway to the Île de France. In 1823, he was prominent in the expedition against Rangoon, as a result of which he was made Post Captain, created C.B. and received the thanks of the Government of India, and praise in the British House of Commons. In 1841-5 he was on the Chinese station in command of HMS Cambrian, and then commanded the Royal Navy’s gunnery school HMS Excellent. Chads reformed the whole system of naval gunnery, both as regards weight of metal and rapidity of fire. He was promoted Rear Admiral in 1854 and was third in command of the fleet sent to the Baltic under Sir Charles Napier, who claimed that Chads ‘knew more about gunnery than any man in the service'. He was one of the leaders in the bombardment and capture of the fortress of Bomarsund. He struck his flag in 1855, and as a reward for his services was created a K.C.B. From 1856 to the end of 1858, he held the command-in-chief in Ireland and in 1865 was created G.C.B. and received the Admiral's good service pension.
