Valentín Alsina (1802-69), Argentine lawyer and politician. He was elected governor of Buenos Aires in 1852, but resigned after a few months, shortly before a military coup. In 1853 Buenos Aires left the Argentinian Federation and declared itself an independent state, of which Alsina became governor in 1857. However the Argentine army recaptured the province in 1859 and he was forced to resign again. Alsina became a member of the Argentine Senate in 1862, serving until his death.

The upper central portrait depicts Manco Cápac. In Inca mythology, Manco Cápac the first king of the Kingdom of Cuzco. Cuzco was a small kingdom in the Andes that began as a small city-state founded by the Incas around the 12th century. In time, through either warfare or peaceful assimilation, it began to grow and was succeeded by the Inca Empire. Manco Cápac is thought to have reigned until about 1230, though some put his death at 1107. Plate to the Gentleman's Magazine.

Four gauchos resting by a fire, their carts behind. Vidal explains that city dwellers call all countrymen 'gauchos' and suggests it derives from the same root as the English 'gawkey' (i.e. awkward and uncooth). Their carts would be unloaded outside the town to avoid congestion inside. He sits at a desk holding a document headed 'Reforma [E]celesiastica Buenos Ayres 1822' (Rivadavia's religious reforms transferred many of the Catholic church's assets to the Republic). Another document, headed 'Systema Representative' also on the table. In 1824 Rivadavia visited London where, in association with the Hullet Brothers bank he founded the Rio de la Plata Mining Association. Rivadavia was also a correspondent and admirer of Jeremy Bentham, who he first met in London in 1820. Engraved after the portrait by Thomas Phillips (1770-1845), whose over 700 portraits record the leading personalities of his time.

In 1858 he exhibited paintings alongside Léon Pallière, during a time the art market in Argentina favoured European scenery rather than local, making this scene more unusual. He died young, in 1860.

Born c. 1788, Vidal entered the Navy in 1808 and retired in 1862. He visited Buenos Aires and Montevideo twice at the end of 1816 (the year Argentina became independent), returning 1828-9. He was stationed on St Helena 1820-1, during Bonaparte's exile.

After Atahualpa rejected the breviary Valverde called the Spaniards to attack the Incans and they conquered without losing one Spanish soldier however many Incans were slaughtered.
