Plan of the Antiquities of Athens as Surveyed by J. Stuart. 1752.
Plan of the Antiquities of Athens as Surveyed by J. Stuart. 1752.
[Drawn by A. Arrowsmith?]
[London: Elizabeth Stuart, 1794.]
Engraved map. 535 x 700mm, 21 x 27½". Small margins.
Map of Athens showing the classical buildings surveyed made by James 'Athenian' Stuart and published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by Stuart & Nicholas Revett. To Stuart's dismay the local authorities would not allow him to survey the Acropolis because of an outbreak of plague. Stuart (1713-88) and Revett (1720-1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'. This map was published in Volume 4; the general map of Attica in the same volume was signed by Arrowsmith.

[Delos.]
[Delos.]
[Drawn by A. Arrowsmith?]
[London: Elizabeth Stuart, 1794.]
Engraved map with aquatint. 530 x 370mm, 21 x 14½".
Map of the Greek island of Delos, published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by James 'Athenian' Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Delos had been the meeting place of the Delian League, a defensive group of Greek city states founded in 477BC but eventually overwhelmed and turned into the Athenian Empire by 454BC. Stuart (1713–88) and Revett (1720–1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. The hatchuring of elevated regions has been aquatinted, an uncommon usage.

Durdham Down has an impressive view of the winding River Avon and the Welsh mountains in the distance. Whereas Clifton had been bought by the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1686, Durdham was still part of the manorial estate of Henbury in the late 18th century. This was until 1861 when it was purchased for the use of the citizens of Bristol. After and from the plate first published in 1756 by Thomas Smith of Derby ( c.1720 - 1767), father of J.R. Smith.

In addition to a successful military career Bunbury collected fossils and old Italian manuscripts (he served in southern Italy and Sicily, 1805-9) and acquired a fine library and art collection. The Right Honble: Charles James Fox.
Drawn by I.R. Smith. Engraved by S.W. Reynolds.
London: Publish'd Octr. 13. 1806, by S.W. Reynolds, 47, Poland Street.
Very fine stipple. Plate 422 x 306mm. Sheet 593 x 440mm. Some tears in the margins.
Charles James Fox (1749-1806), styled The Honourable from 1762, as a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned thirty-eight years. Fox was the first foreign secretary of the United Kingdom and vocal supporter of American independence. Also known for his rivalry with William Pitt the Younger and a staunch opponent of George III he was reckless in politics as at the gaming tables. Fox held office briefly as a Tory under Lord North then led the opposition. Fox strongly criticised Lord North and the conduct of the American war, viewing the cause of the American patriots as a struggle for liberty against oppressive external power. He supported the revolutionaries of the United States, often dressing in the colours of George Washington's army. He championed America’s cause, denouncing taxation of Americans without their consent. Reform was a passion but as a supporter of the revolutionary cause in France, his credibility was diminished from 1792 by the excesses of the French revolutionaries.
