The famous scene of Alexander the Great drinking a potion prepared by Philip of Acarnania, despite being warned by Parmenion that his physician had been bribed by Darius III to poison him, showing his trust in his friend. The scene is presented within an elaborate baroque architectural surround. In 1732 Samuel Sympson advertised for sale a volume of '164 different designs of the celebrated Master Le Potre' [Jean Lepautre] ... The said Mr Sympson having purchased the plates from France, the prints will be sold at a very low rate'. Sympson moved to Maiden Lane soon afterwards.

A high-wheeled cart pulled by two oxen, driven down a steep bank by a gaucho riding on the yoke. The flat plains of Argentine mean that no canals could be built to supply Buenos Aires with drinking water, resulting in large numbers of water carts From Emeric Essex Vidal's ''Picturesque Illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Monte Video'', one of the earliest descriptions of Argentinian life. Born c. 1788, Vidal entered the Navy in 1808 and retired in 1862. He visited Buenos Aires and Montevideo twice at the end of 1816 (the year Argentina became independent), returning 1828-9. He was stationed on St Helena 1820-1, during Bonaparte's exile.

From 'Voyage au pôle Sud et dans l'Océanie sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zélée 1837-1840', the account of Jules Dumont D'Urville's second expedition to the South Seas. The 31 volumes took 14 years to publish, not helped by D'Urville's death in the famous Versailles Rail Accident of 1842, the first French railway disaster.

Outside a tavern in Edinburgh, a brawl begins between two drunkards; a thirs man sits on a barrel with the tankard in one hand and a spoon in the other. Edinburgh gets the name Auld-Riekie (old smoky) from the thick columns of smoke that would spew into the air from the chimneys where coal and wood fires were burnt.

From a painting by Jan van Dalen (fl. 1632-70), painted 1648, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Accession Number GG_1687). Engraved by Anton Joseph von Prenner (1683-1761) for 'Theatrum artis pictoriae', an ambitious plan to publish 30 volumes of prints representing the entire Imperial art collection in Stallburg, Vienna. Only four were published, each containing 40 plates.

Bacchus, god of wine (sat on a cheetah to right) leading a procession of revellers. Etching by Charles Eisen (1720-78), painter, draughtsman and illustrator. This is one of few plates that Eisen etched himself- his reputation was established primarily on the basis of his drawings, which were engraved by other to illustrate nearly 400 books including editions of Lucretius, Ovid, Tacitus, Virgil, Boccaccio, Ariosto, Erasmus and La Fontaine.

Pair of stipples. 350 x 450mm (13¾ x 17¾") very wide margins left & right (marginal tears). 'Breakfast' trimmed to plate at top, 'Dinner' with loss of margin to plate at bottom.
The 'Breakfast' shows sportsmen in a bare breakfast parlour; the 'Dinner' shows five men and two ladies seated at a more opulent dinner-table. These plates would have been originally published by Dickinson in the 1780s.

The brothel. Three men drinking and playing music at a table in the centre; a bare chested woman steals from the left man's purse. A dog lying under the table to the left, and a couple embracing in the background. See British Museum "1880,0807.86" described as copy included in "A collection of thirty-nine facsimiles of rare etchings" Plate 18, by William Young Ottley (1771-1836) Artist, turned dealer and collector of Italian paintings, prints and drawings and Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, 1833-36.

A comic portrait of a middle aged man shaking the last drop out of a decanter. The Beefsteak Club or the Sublime Society was a dining club which, in 1834, met at the Bedford Coffee House, where members would dine on steak and potatoes and drank port. Members were required to wear a uniform of a blue coat with a buff waistcoat with brass buttons. The member depicted also wears a gridiron medal, the gridiron being the symbol of the club. An empty bottle and a corkscrew are on the table.

Four undergraduates approach a fat parson at a well-stocked dining table, begging for food. They say: ''Behold! Sir your half starvd Petitioners''; ''I can make a Norfolk Dumpling! Thanks be to Miss Diana Young for her instruction!''; "Allow us but a Mutton-Chop"; and ''And your Petitioners shall ever pray''. The parson retorts ''No! Eating and drinking cloud yr understanding you shall have none''. A satire on the ban of entertainments in private rooms by James Backhouse, the Dean (and parson here). Behind him stands Henry Gordon, butler of Trinity College, with a demonic tail. The BM identifies Diana Young as a courtesan who intended to give lectures on entertainment in private rooms at the college.

Men playing cards and smoking in a tavern, after Dutch painter of genre scenes David Teniers (1610-90), and engraved during the artists' lifetime by his contemporary Jan van der Bruggen (1648/9-1690) was an early mezzotinter working in France. This same scene was later engraved by the British collector and printmaker Captain William Baillie.

After a hearty dinner and the consumption of two bottles of alcohol, the husband slumps back into a chair smoking a pipe with his wife reading to him and the male guest, who smokes a cigar. From 'Le Charivari', the illustrated newspaper published in Paris, from 1832 to 1937. After 1835, when the government banned political caricature, Le Charivari began publishing satires of everyday life.

Charles II (1630-1685) had no choice but to flee England following the appointment of Cromwell as Lord Protector, who placed the British Isles under military rule. Despite various family connections, the French and Dutch allied themselves with Cromwell's government, forcing Charles to flee to Spain territories of Southern Netherlands. On the advise of General Monk he left Brussels and travelled to the Netherlands where he made his Declaration and was after wards proclaimed King. He left the Netherlands via The Hague and Schevelingen in May 1660. Anonymous engraving probably Dutch from a Broadside that would have small engravings arranged in rows or alternatively around one central etching.
