The Tate records that ''it is very probably identifiable with a work exhibited by Reynolds at the Royal Academy in 1785, and entitled simply 'a little girl''' and that Sir Robert Edgcumbe, a Victorian descendant of Reynolds, identified her as the artist's great-niece Theophila Gwatkin (1782-1844).

Anthony of Padua (1195-1231), the Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, who was patron of animals.

Elizabeth Bannister (née Harper) (1757-1849), actress and singer. She also accompanied herself on the guitar, as shown in John Russell's 1799 portrait. At the time this print was made Harper was only three years into her career but was already earning high salaries. In 1778 she was contracted to perform at the Pantheon (on London's Oxford Street) for two years, earning one thousand pounds in the process. In 1783 she married the actor and comedian John Bannister, and she retired in 1792. From a set of small mezzotint portraits of actresses and singers, published by the printseller William Richardson in 1780, apparently to follow up a similar set of actor portraits published the previous year. Engraved after a painting by draughtsman and singer Robert Dighton (1751-1814) by the mezzotint engraver and printseller Robert Laurie (1755?-1836). Music, instruments and mask (representing theatre) in title area.

Mary Meredith (d.1807), wife of Lord Frederick Cambell, her second husband. She became famous for obtaining a divorce from her first husband, Laurence Shirley (1720-60), 4th Earl Ferrers, on the grounds of cruelty. Ferrers became the last peer to be hanged, for the muder of his steward, who is said to have stood witness for his wife in the divorce. Ferres was hanged at Tyburn, cursing his wife that she should experience a death more painful than his own. She died a very torturous death, in a fire in the tower of Combe Bank, after which all that could be found of her a bone of her thumb. Her ghost is said to still haunt the grounds.

A pair of scenes set in rustic settings: a young woman sitting in a bare interior, unaware of a young man who peers slyly through the window, listening attentively to another woman in tattered clothes with a broad-brimmed hat, who reads her palm; and a young woman wearing a mob cap, shawl and apron, sitting at the door of a thatched cottage, her left arm hooked over the back of her chair, reading a letter. There is a basket upside down beside her, and a bird drinking from a plate on the ground next to it. A young man is seen bribing a second woman behind a tree next to the cottage to the right.
