Very scarce book. Oblong 4to, original green morocco gilt, front board detached, marbled endpapers; lacking titlepage, 18 lithographic views on india. Varying degrees of foxing throughout.

One of the principal streets on the Grosvenor Estate, Brook Street was developed in the first half of the 18th century and runs from Hanover Square to Grosvenor Square. A river scene with a bridge leading to a ruined keep, from a painting by Giacomo Cortese (1621-75), known as Il Borgognone, a Frenchman who spent his career in Italy, with an output mainly of battle scenes. The original painting belonged to Peter Delmé (1710-70), a wealthy English merchant, MP for Ludgershall 1734-41 and for Southampton 1741-54. He was nicknamed 'Peter the Czar' for his considerable inherited wealth, but he spent the lot before shooting himself in his house in Grosvenor Square.

The plan for London's first bypass, building Euston Road & Pentonville Road to allow the Duke of Grafton a better route to drive his cattle to Smithfield Market. Among the features marked are: Oxford Street; Berkeley, Grosvenor, Cavendish, Hanover, Red Lion and Lincoln's Inn Squares; Middlesex Hospital, Foundlings Hospital, Montague House (later the British Museum), St Giles's Church, 'Farthing Pye House' (a pub known for its pies, frequented by William Blake) and White Conduit House (future home to the White Conduit Club, later reorganised as the Marylebone Cricket Club).

The north side of Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, London. It is the centrepiece of the Mayfair property of the Duke of Westminster, and takes its name from their surname, "Grosvenor". From 'A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster, illustrated With the most interesting Views, accurately delineated And executed in Aquatinta by Thomas Malton', 1792 - 1801. Thomas Malton (1748 - 1804) was an architectural watercolourist and teacher of Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner; also an aquatinter, notably after his own designs of London views.

An early view looking across Grosvenor Square, London. The oval shaped planted area with it's equestrian statue can be seen in the centre, with a few carriages, figures, and a sedan chair around square. Sir Richard Grosvenor obtained a licence to develop Grosvenor Square and the surrounding streets in 1710, and development is believed to have commenced in around 1721. Grosvenor Square was one of the three or four most fashionable residential addresses in London from its construction until the Second World War, with numerous leading members of the aristocracy in residence.

View of Kingston Bridge, showing boats on the River Thames and All Saints church in the distance. The bridge, still standing today, was built of Portland stone with five elliptical arches to a design by Edward Lapidge (1779-1860), the County surveyor. The first stone was laid by the Earl of Liverpool at a ceremony on 7 November 1825 and the bridge was opened by the Duchess of Clarence, on July 17, 1828.

Diagram of André-Jacques Garnerin's (1769 – 1823) parachute descent from his hot air balloon flight from St. George's Parade (the Volunteeer Ground, Grosvenor Square) on the evening of 21 September 1802. The parachute descended in a field near St Pancras. This trip gave rise to the English ballad, "Bold Garnerin went up, Which increased his Repute, And came safe to earth, In his Grand Parachute." The image is labeled with letters, suggesting that there was an associated key French balloonist Garnerin was appointed Official Aeronaut of France and visited England with his wife Jeanne Geneviève Garnerin (née Labrosse, 1775–1847) in 1802 during the Peace of Amiens. He was also the inventor of the frameless parachute.
