Sold by C. Browne at ye Globe by St. Pauls Church [c.1710].
Mezzotint. 200 x 150mm (8 x 6"). Thread margins, publication line weakly inked.
A half-length portrait of Prince William Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700), son of Princess Anne and George of Denmark. He was viewed as a Protestant champion and his birth seemed to cement the Protestant succession as established in the 'Glorious Revolution'. He died at the age of 11, before Anne came to the throne, so the Protestant line of the House of Stuart lost its only chance at continuation. So as not to revert to a Catholic state, Parliament chose to pass the Act of Settlement 1701, which settled the throne of England on Sophia, Electress of Hanover, granddaugther of James I, and her Protestant heirs. A collection of Baillie's prints was issued by Boydell in 1792 and 1803; this example has a gilt fore-edge, indictating it had been bound. Ex: collection of The Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

The posthumous son of the Stadholder William II of Holland and Mary, daughter of Charles I, William married his cousin Mary, daughter of James II and Anne Hyde in 1677. In 1688 he accepted an invitation by a group of leading statesmen to land in Britain with an armed force; after the flight of James II he was crowned king, jointly with his wife, in 1689. William's life-long devotion to the fight against French expansionism benefited from additional resources after he became King. Although he lacked warmth and physical presence he showed considerable political, diplomatic and military ability. Engraving by Gerard Valck (1651/1652 - 1726), first published by Nicolaas Visscher I c.1675. Later states show William as King of England; the plate was later transformed into George I.

Mezzotint, 225 x 175mm. 9 x 7". Lower left margin chipped at corner. Glue residue upper left.
King William III (1650 - 1702), wearing wig, cravat, robes, chain with George and coat of arms; his right hand placed on a crown, with an orb alongside it. First published by the famous early mezzotinter and re-publisher of older plates John Smith (1652 - 1743); this is a later impression on wove paper. Chaloner Smith: 121 (Engraver not ascertained: Class I).
