Pagode dans une Grotto à Touranne.

Finot imp. [Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1832-3.]
Aquatint on india. 360 x 280mm (14¼ x 11"). With blindstamp of the stern of "La Favorite".
From Francois-Edmund Paris's account of Cyrille-Pierre-Théodore Laplace's voyage to the South Seas (1830-2) on 'La Favorite', a corvette of 680 tons and a crew of 177. After exploring the Strait of Malacca, 'le Favorite' sailed for Canton. Anchoring at Tourane [Da Nang] on the east coast of Vietnam, some of the crew took a small boat into the natural canals among grottos there. They were fascinated by the formations of calcium, some as brilliant and as hard as marble. 'We arrived in a place hidden behind the grotto, secluded, where a truly magical effect struck us with astonishment'. There they found two colossal sculptures carved into the stone, one a strangely dressed figure, and the other a ferocious, fabulous animal.

Vietti.
Vietti. Role d'Arsace (3.me Acte de Semiramide).
Lith. Tischulanoff.
[n.d. c.1850.]
Lithograph on album page. 400 x 297mm. 15¾ x 11¾". Time stained.
Probably Carolina Vietti, who was in Venice at La Fenice and known to Venetian audiences in 1843/44. It is recorded that she sang Semiramide in Torino in 1832-33. She was known by Verdi, who wanted to write the part of Ernani for her, however it was changed to Tenor for Carlo Guasco. While this has been catalogued as Carolina Vietti, this could also be Rosina Pico-Vietti, recorded to have sung the same role and also a contralto primarily in the USA and Havana; she was married to Adelindo Vietti who also performed at La Fenice. Semiramide is an opera by Gioachino Rossini, based on Voltaire's tragedy Semiramis. The opera was first performed at La Fenice in Venice in 1823. The role of Arsace, the Commander of the Assyrian army is usually played by a Contralto.
