A keyplate to Leslie's painting of the christening of Victoria, the Princess Royal, on the 10th February 1841. Leslie was given special permission to attend the ceremony in order to capture the scene in sketches, he then spent time studying the portraits of the various figures over the coming months. The painting was finished in 1842 and an engraving was published in 1849. The work is still housed in the Royal Collection.

H.M.S. Victory at anchor off Portsmouth, serving as a harbour ship. Her career included the First and Second Battles of Ushant and St Vincent, with a three-year refit (1800-3) before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. In 1922 she was moved into a dry dock at Portsmouth for preservation as a museum ship. Today she is the flagship of the First Sea Lord and is the world's oldest naval ship still in commission.

Baron de Vidil, Alfred Vidil, was the son of a glove-maker at Nancy in France. He came to England around 1830 and was in the employment of a wholesale glove warehouse in Bread-street, Cheapside. He managed to induce Miss Jackson to marry him, the daughter of Mr. Jackson, of Chapel-street, Grosvenor Place. Her father was a man of considerable wealth, but refused to acknowledge her marriage to Vidil, and therefore on the birth of their son, he relented so far as to leave her the sum of £30,000 away from her husband and eventually settled on their son. Following the death of Mr Jackson and later Miss Jackson, Vidil started to loose wealth and could only survive on that of his son. He became embarrassed by his circumstances that he planned and attempted to execute the horrible crime of murdering his only son.

A rare stipple. 192 x 140mm. 7½ x 5½".
Francisco Vieira de Matos (1765-1805), who choose the artistic name of Vieira Portuense, was a Portuguese painter, one of the introducers of Neoclassicism in Portuguese painting. He was, in the neoclassical style, one of the two great Portuguese painters of his generation, with Domingos Sequeira. He first studied in Lisbon, later moving to Rome. He travelled through Italy, Germany, Austria and England, before returning to Portugal, in 1800. He met Swiss painter Angelika Kauffmann, from who he seems to have received influences. He seems to anticipate some motives of the romantic painting, in several of his historical paintings. He contracted tuberculosis, and moved to Madeira, were he died, aged only 39.

The baroque Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) in Vienna, commissioned by Emperor Charles VI in 1713, following a plague epidemic in Vienna. It was dedicated to 16th cerntury reformer Carlo Borromeo, who was known for healing plague sufferers. The church was designed by Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach and completed, after Fischer's death, by his son. Plate from Fischer's 'Entwurf einer historischen Architektur' ('Outline of Historical Architecture', first published 1721) , the first comparative architecture of all periods and nations.

Austrian architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach's first plan for the famous palace of Schönbrun in Vienna. It has been claimed that the audacious 'mega-Versailles' envisaged here, with the palace on the crest of a hill and claiming improbably to offer view of 'the borders of Hungary', were 'intended to display the "universal claim to power" of the Habsburg dynasty, but never seriously considered as a concrete architectural project'. The palace was eventually built at the bottom of the hill, rather than the top as shown here, along with other adjustments. The Imperial Stables in Vienna, designed by Austrian architect Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach and inspired by the Emperor Nero's 'Domus Aurea'. The building included stables for six hundred horses, room for two hundred state coaches, and an amphitheatre for public displays, and a horse pond. The stables were severely damaged during the French Occupation of Vienna in the Napoleonic Wars, after which they were renovated and expanded. After the stables became redundant in the twentieth century, the site was used for trade fairs before recently becoming 'MuseumsQuartier Wien', an arts centre including several museums, galleries and other cultural institutions. In the background are the Vienna districts of Laimgrube and St. Ulrich Plate from Fischer's 'Entwurf einer historischen Architektur' ('Outline of Historical Architecture', first published 1721) , the first comparative architecture of all periods and nations.

The palace was built adjacent to the Imperial Stables, also designed by Fischer. The Winter Palace on Himmelpfortgasse in Vienna, built for Prince Eugene of Savoy. It was subsequently owned by Empress Maria Theresa, used as the Court Treasury and Ministry of Finance, and has recently become an exhibition space run by the Belvedere. This print shows the visit of the Grand Vizier's emissary to Vienna on the 9th April 1711. A scene in Vietnam with a man walking in the centre, leading a bull with his back turned to the viewer. A group of figures to the right are gathered beside bundles of reeds at the entrance to a thatched building, set under trees. A river can be seen in the background to the right with thick trees on a slope to the left. John Webber was the official artist on Cook's final voyage through the Pacific; his drawings formed the basis for printed illustrations to the account of 'A Voyage to the Pacific', published in 1784.
